What first got you into music?

I was into all the music stuff from a young age. I don’t remember exactly when the passion started, but my parents say I used to sing in my crib every night before sleep as a kid. The one moment I remember thinking that I wanted to be an artist when I grew up was when I used to sing and dance around my room to my mom’s iPod and pretend like I was performing a live concert to my stuffed animals. I feel like this is not an original experience, but I just remember wanting so badly to make others feel strong emotions when I sing! Even as a kid. That is what made me eventually want to start writing.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?

Honest. A common thread with all my music is lyrical honesty. I like to create good feeling, listenable music, but that has lyrics that really stand out to the listener. I love alliteration and imagery and storytelling, and anything that makes the listener go “oh that’s really clever!” Lately, I am trying to make music that reminds you of all of the different feelings of being in different types of weather. That sounds weird but I mean like, walking in the rain, hiking in the fog, biking at the beach in the sun, driving with the windows down late at night. I want my music to be the soundtrack to all of life’s feelings!

What is your creative process like?

My creative process varies from time to time! Mostly though, I have a voice memo that I took from earlier in the day when I randomly got an idea, and then at night I will sit down at my guitar or the piano and flesh out the rest of the song. Sometimes, I will have super heightened emotions and sit down and write a song really quick, and sometimes I just feel like writing about nothing and humming along for a few hours!

Who would you most like to collaborate with?

I would love to just be in a room with Amy Allen. I think she is such an incredible songwriter, and as someone who really appreciates lyricism, I look up to her so much.

Have you got a ritual of sorts when writing and thinking about your music?

No particular rituals, but I do have a very sacred space that I go to when I am struggling to put a concept to melody. There’s a chapel on my college campus with a beautiful grand piano and amazing acoustics, and I go there to write from time to time. It is always such a beautiful experience, and the piano feels like an ocean of opportunity for me in that room. Like somehow the piano has more notes and possibilities than usual.

If you could have any superhero power, what would it be and why?

The ONLY correct answer to this question is teleportation. I am so passionate about this answer because I can’t think of any more useful, amazing power. You could travel the whole world, have any food that you want, live anywhere you want and still be close to your family, never have to do long distance with a partner, take any job and not have to move, see your parents every day, take care of a loved one if they need you, etc, etc. Would solve so many problems for me!

What actor would play you in a movie about your life?

I’ve never had a good answer to this but I would have to say Bridget Mendler.

What would be a good theme song for your life?

Old Friends by Pinegrove

What historical figure would you love to see in 21st century life?

Jesus! Would probably be a beneficial conversation.

If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?

Please learn how to play the guitar better!! Don’t stop taking voice lessons!! Other than that, I don’t think I am wise enough to be giving myself advice yet.
