What first got you into music?
I’ve always been into music. Coming from the Caribbean (Grenada, to be exact), there was always music in the air. The islands are full of soul, dance, and music.
Who inspired you to make music?
I love mainstream acts like Beyoncé, Lady Gaga, Drake, Charli XCX, Troye Sivan, and Lil’ Kim, as well as local Toronto DJs like BAMBII—the list goes on!
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
I’m very inspired by pop, rap, R&B, house, and electro. With my island roots, I love to add a fusion of dancehall, reggaeton, and Afrobeats to my music.
Is there a city or venue that holds special significance to you, and can you share a memorable experience from there?
I have always loved going to Miami (South Beach). Not only do you get the vibrant culture, but as a summer baby, having the beach right there is always a treat. One of my first times travelling to Miami, I met and got to hang out with the Brazilian superstar artist Pabllo Vittar. It was during my birthday weekend, and they sang Happy Birthday to me!
Do you have any rituals before you hit the stage? If so, what are they?
I love to keep my energy super calm before hitting the stage. Having a moment alone and connecting with myself is a plus.
What is your creative process like?
For me, the creative process mainly involves connecting with my producer, listening to a few beats, and selecting the one that resonates with me the most; I then take it home, lie in bed in the dark, blast it through my headphones, and begin writing to it.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I would love to collaborate with Tyla, Rihanna, Nicki Minaj, or Beyoncé. I’d be extremely ecstatic with either one of those artists.
If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?
I think opening up for someone like Tyla would be incredible.
Are you a cat or dog person?
Neither, lol. But if I had to choose, it would be a dog person.
If you had a time machine, would you travel to the future or back to the past?
I would travel back to the past. But always look forward to the future.
If you were to write an autobiography, what would the title be?
Think you know?… You have no idea by Roney X
What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?
Chicken wings hold a special place in my heart, lol.
What makes you nostalgic?
I am reminiscing about my high school days and the wonderful music that came out back then.
