Nashville, Tennessee’s own Americana rocker, Sophie Gault, has teamed up with renowned producer–songwriter Gurf Morlix to release her own rendition of “Is There Anyone Out There,” a standout track from Kiss of the Diamondback. This track is a masterpiece, offering a calming atmosphere that invites listeners to sit back, unwind, and feel as though they’re right there in the moment.
Originally released in the midst of COVID-19, “Is There Anyone Out There” captured the deep loneliness and isolation so many people felt at the time. This created a very somber, slow, yet calming ambiance within the track. What makes Gault’s rendition stand out is the addition of another voice. While Morlix’s original is sung solely by him, emphasizing isolation, Gault’s version pairs her with him secondary vocalist, in a way reflecting the other side of the pandemic years later, when many of us no longer feel as alone. Gault talks about her relationship with prominent producer songwriter Gurf Morlix, noting, “It’s magical how this one came together. I’ve known Gurf for a few years now, and he’s always been very supportive and encouraging to me as an artist and writer, which is a big deal to me. He’s made some of the music that is now a part of my own musical identity—he helped shape how I play the guitar when I was listening to him all those late nights trying to work out licks that I still use to this day. I’d been meaning to do a cover of one of his songs, and while I was on a flight home from somewhere, I listened to Kiss of the Diamondback, one of my favorite Gurf albums. This was the last song on that album, and it put me in such a calm, meditative state. I decided that has to be the one I do. So I worked up my own version.” Gault leans on gentle guitar strums and her powerful yet soft, somber vocals to craft an atmosphere filled with loss and longing, alongside love and hope. The track intentionally uses very minimal instrumentation, and that simplicity is what makes it so effective; it captures the feeling of being alone while quietly yearning for human connection.
