Zoey Tess has never been shy about speaking her mind, but her latest single, “Knocking at Your Front Door,” shows her doing it with clarity and confidence.
It’s the first track from her upcoming debut album entitled There’s Gonna Be a Reckoning, and it sets the tone for a body of work shaped by urgency.
The intro unravels in a way that feels almost private. It’s just Tess’s vocals and an acoustic guitar, as if she’s letting you overhear the moment she first put the idea to paper. There is definite rawness here and a simplicity.
But once the band comes in, the mood shifts. The drums settle into a heartbeat rhythm, the guitars gather tension and the whole track straightens its spine. Zoey Tess is not tiptoeing around her point but walking right up to the front door and knocking hard.
Her writing is direct. You can hear her frustration with a political and cultural moment that keeps circling the same wounds. She confronts the rising authoritarianism, religious manipulation and the endless cycles of violence as well as the refusal to protect children. The connection to her upbringing near Sandy Hook runs under the surface, which is truly where each lyric is felt deeply.
The recording carries its own story. Tess and producer Spencer Hattendorf brought this song to life at Clubhouse Studio in Rhinebeck, which is a space known for its warm sound and character. This atmosphere comes through in the completed track. Paul Antonell engineered the session with the exact kind of ease that only comes from knowing a room inside and out, and Mario J. McNulty’s mix lets the song open up naturally. Dave McNair sets it all with a mastering touch that preserves the grit and edges.
The reason “Knocking at Your Front Door” works so well is that it doesn’t try to be an anthem but it becomes one by being radically honest. It is rooted in the present, and in the frustration, the fear and the stubborn hope that refuses to disappear.
As a first look to her upcoming album There’s Gonna Be a Reckoning, it’s a compelling start. Zoey Tess is more anchored than ever before and more willing to follow her instincts wherever they lead. The rest of the album promises to dig even deeper.
About Zoey Tess
Zoey Tess is a Connecticut based singer songwriter, producer and multi-instrumentalist. Her music layers the intimacy of folk storytelling with the grit and resolve of 1990’s era alternative music.
Born in Coral Springs, Florida and raised in Newtown, Connecticut, Tess began studying violin and piano as a child before continuing her training at the Interlochen Center for the Arts in Michigan. She briefly attended Berklee College of Music before deciding to create her own path, a choice that eventually led her to producer Vic Steffens and a series of early projects that bridged jazz, soul and contemporary pop.
In recent years, Tess has stepped fully into a more politically charged and folk driven sound. Her forthcoming debut album, There’s Gonna Be a Reckoning, recorded at the legendary Clubhouse Studio in Rhinebeck, shows this new direction with the help of producer Spencer Hattendorf, Grammy winning mixer Mario J. McNulty and celebrated musicians including Dave Eggar.
The album’s lead single, “Knocking at Your Front Door,” introduces Tess as an artist unafraid to confront the world as she sees it, with clarity, conviction and the kind of emotional transparency that has become her hallmark.
She currently lives in Newtown with her husband, continuing to write, record and channel her activism into her music.
