Meet Alyssa Joseph, a Nashville-based indie rock singer-songwriter known for her raw emotion and honest storytelling. With her newest single, “I Wanna Feel Good,” released on May 30, Alyssa invites you to explore the vulnerable space between surviving and thriving. This gritty, emotionally charged anthem speaks directly to the mental struggles many, especially women, face as they try to appear “okay” on the outside while navigating inner turmoil.

When you listen to “I Wanna Feel Good,” you’ll hear a song that embraces the idea of “fake it until you make it.” Alyssa describes it as a track about manifesting what you want, even while dealing with the difficulties along the way. As you immerse yourself in the music, the song prompts you to recognize the intricacy of pursuing happiness and the emotional strain of maintaining a brave façade.

This single marks the start of a new chapter for Alyssa—a period defined by radical self-awareness and artistic confidence. Produced by Jared Corder of Repeat Repeat, the song fuses urgent guitar riffs with Alyssa’s emotionally intense vocals. If you’re a fan of introspective indie rock, you’ll notice the clear and powerful influence of artists such as Sharon Van Etten and Angie McMahon, who create music that simultaneously heals and wounds.

Alyssa’s song reflects on emotional labor, perfectionism, and the societal pressure to appear “fine” despite inner turmoil. Through her lyrics and sound, she taps into a shared cultural experience where appearing put together often conceals deep personal battles. You can relate to this messy, nonlinear journey toward feeling good and finding emotional balance.

Originating from South Jersey and now making her home in Nashville, Alyssa infuses her music with the weight of her own lived experience. Beyond her solo career, you can connect with the community she’s built through her DIY music space—a hub that values creative authenticity and openness. Additionally, Alyssa is an advocate for causes you might care about, including veganism, mental health awareness, and fostering genuine artistic expression.

As you look into Alyssa’s work, her newest single opens a window into the realities of emotional survival and creative courage. Whether you’re facing your struggles or seeking music that resonates with honesty, Alyssa’s voice invites you to embrace vulnerability and the imperfect pursuit of feeling good.

How would you describe your music?

I describe it as big, loud feelings. It’s soft, vulnerable lyrics with a tough, loud indie rock exterior.

What’s the best show you’ve ever played?

Portland, Maine. It was a Monday night, but the room was packed. The headlining band did a Silver Jews tribute set; it was soon after David Berman passed. People came up to me after the show, and we really connected at the merch table. The next day we were exploring downtown Portland, and we got recognized on the street from our show the night before (granted, I had blue hair at the time, so I was easy to pick out of a crowd). But it was super cool.

When you create music, what is your personal purpose or goal?

When I write songs, it’s for catharsis. It’s to help put words to my feelings. I’ve always had really big feelings. I’m grateful I’ve had an outlet for them.

Was anyone else involved in writing, recording, or producing the songs?

Yes!! Jared Corder of Polychrome Ranch recorded, mixed, and produced “I wanna feel good.” I walked out of that first session with something so much better than I ever could have created on my own. Jared is an incredible producer. He makes it so easy to just be an artist. He empowers you, doesn’t let you get stuck on anything, and always has fresh ideas. I’m so grateful I get to work with him.

If we were to look at the artists you are listening to, who would be on your playlist?

Oof. So so many. Blondshell, Indigo de Souza, Annie DiRusso, Ben Kweller, Manchester Orchestra, Wild Pink, Waxahatchee, Taylor Swift, Francis of Delirium, CMAT, Angie McMahon, MJ Lenderman, and so many more.

Could you please share your most unique talent or party trick with us?

I can hum-whistle! Meaning, I can hum and whistle at the same time, haha. It’s very fun, but I don’t normally pull it out at parties.

What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?

Probably vegan alfredo pasta. My fiancé and I have mastered a recipe for a vegan alfredo that is insanely good and creamy. We sauté up some veggies (onion, garlic, tomato, broccoli, spinach) and add that in. And I normally bake bread from scratch. That with a glass of Lambrusco = the perfect meal.

                What makes you nostalgic?

Lots of things. Sitting on warm pavement. Listening to The Chick’s cover of “Landslide.” The smell of a freshly cut lawn. Eating a pretzel stick wrapped in a fruit roll-up. The smell right when it starts raining. Michelle Branch’s “The Spirit Room” and Avril Lavigne’s “Let Go.” Summer nights with the window open and a soft breeze coming in.

As a kid, were you ever frightened of a monster under the bed or in the cupboard?

Yes. I was a very frightened kid. After they taught us about kidnapping in 1st grade, any sense of safety was over for me. I definitely thought I had monsters under my bed and in my closet. My Dad got me this green fabric monster shoe-holder to hang on my closet door when I was a kid. She was a friendly-looking monster, and he said she would eat any other monster that tried to come into my room. I still slept with the lights on until I was 10 though, haha.

If you could have any superhero power, what would it be and why?

Teleportation, hands down. No airports, no carsickness, no expensive travel that goes terribly wrong. I’d love to go visit friends for an afternoon hang. Travel and see all the parts of the world I’ve never seen. Be able to get home to my family quickly if I’m needed.
