6 Ways to Maximise Privacy Through Smart Backyard Design

Your garden is generally thought to be your own private piece of nature, and every homeowner should enjoy it freely whenever weather permits. However, this isn’t truly the reality for many people. Whether your garden is located next to a park, or your neighbours have a direct view of your backyard, it can often be difficult to fully enjoy your outdoor areas when you feel like they don’t provide enough intimacy and privacy.

Thankfully, the solution to this problem can be quite simple. If you are renovating your home and your outdoor spaces, here are some easy and efficient ways you could maximise privacy in your backyard:

    Green hedges

If you’re on the lookout for green exterior renovation options, natural hedges are a wonderful choice for increasing the privacy in your garden. They are thick enough to ensure isolation, they provide screening all year round, and they are usually not restricted by local regulations, meaning you could select the height of the hedges that best meets your privacy needs. But to ensure privacy throughout the entire year, it might be a good option to choose evergreens such as arborvitae or Italian cypress. Such hedges can provide a wonderful solution for dividing adjoining yards, or even blocking the sightlines to your garden and other parts of your home.

    Greenery on lattice

Lattice screens are another good way to add more privacy to your backyard, being quite an inexpensive trick that makes your house look expensive, warmer, and more inviting. However, wood panels full of holes might not be ideal for maximising isolation, which is why you might also want to consider adding some climbing plants to the lattice screens. For instance, climbing roses and wisterias can be a great option for beautiful scents and blooms, while potato vines and evergreen clematis can provide some wonderful greenery and good coverage. No matter what you choose, crawling plants are the ideal option for letting in breezes and more natural light, while creating a more comfortable atmosphere.

    Security fences

For truly maximum privacy, fences are always the best option. Whether you need to section off a pool, patio, or side yard, or even fence in your entire backyard, steel or aluminium security fences are the easiest and most efficient way you could create some isolation in your home and ensure year-round protection. Being versatile, durable, and easy to maintain, these security fences come in a number of different styles that could beautifully complement your house, the surroundings, or the overall decor. And as long as you have the best Fencing Components products at your disposal, you might even be able to install a great security fence yourself.

    Masonry walls

A masonry wall made of stone or stucco is another good way to ensure complete privacy and isolation in your home. However, unless you have a particularly large backyard, solid walls could often feel too heavy and harsh in most outdoor spaces. To make the masonry walls look less oppressive, you also have the option of cutting in windows or openings decorated with ornamental inwork, for example, in an effort to make your backyard feel airier and more spacious despite being walled in. But creating such openings could also mean that you might need to make compromises on the privacy aspect.

    Pergolas and panels

Defined spaces such as patios, decks, and outdoor kitchens are usually much easier to screen than an entire garden. By building a simple enclosure around these areas, you will be able to create a more private and intimate space, while still enjoying the outdoors. These enclosures could take on a number of different forms, whether it’s lattice panels, wooden pergolas with a slatted top, or any other simple wooden structure, possibly combined with crawling plants for added privacy. What’s more, such structures could also prove to be quite easy outdoor garden projects, meaning you could even build a wonderful wooden enclosure by yourself.

    Private gardens

If you wish to instil a sense of privacy, you don’t necessarily have to wall off your entire backyard. You also have the option of setting aside a specific isolated area that will give you the opportunity to enjoy some private time outdoors without being entirely fenced in. For instance, you could build a sunken seating area on your deck for entertaining and relaxing, and then create a small wall of potted plants around this area. This option will help to provide more intimacy and privacy when spending time outdoors, but it won’t force you to block off your entire property if that’s not something you’d like to do.

    Wrapping up

Evidently, there are a number of different ways you could efficiently maximise privacy in your garden. While all the ideas mentioned above might be smart and simple solutions, the final decision should come down to your personal taste, the overall style of your home, as well as your needs regarding privacy in your backyard.
