Baileigh Jane Steps Outside on “Smash Your TV”

There is something quietly radical about leaving the screen behind and walking toward the water.

On “Smash Your TV,” Brooklyn-based indie artist and producer Baileigh Jane turns that impulse into a loose, sun-warmed piece of beach rock. Dreamy guitars hover at the edges. Twang slips through the arrangement. Bass, drums and synths settle into an easy groove that feels less concerned with arriving somewhere than noticing what is already there.

Released August 21, the single carries a simple proposition beneath its relaxed surface: turn down the noise, step outside and pay attention.

A Song That Took Eight Years to Arrive

“Smash Your TV” may sound immediate, but its path to release has been anything but hurried. Baileigh Jane wrote the song eight years ago, and it has since moved through different bands, demos and arrangements before reaching its present form.

“I wrote this song 8 years ago. Since then, it’s lived a million lives being performed with different bands, being recorded as different demos. One thing always stays the same about this song. Light-hearted, beach rock with hopecore lyrics,”

That history gives the track an interesting tension. Its message asks the listener to return to the immediate world, while the song itself has spent years changing shape before finding the version that could finally be released.

Presence Without the Lecture

A song called “Smash Your TV” could easily become an obvious piece of digital-age frustration. Baileigh takes a softer route.

The track is less interested in condemning screens than in remembering what exists beyond them. Physical space. The body. Nature. Small details that disappear beneath the constant static of everyday attention.

That distinction matters. Instead of treating disconnection as another reason for cynicism, “Smash Your TV” frames presence as something pleasurable. The world outside the screen is strange, imperfect and alive. The invitation is simply to go meet it.

Florida Light, Brooklyn Perspective

The coastal atmosphere is increasingly part of Baileigh Jane’s musical language. Originally from Florida and now based in Brooklyn, the artist has been drawing more visibly from those roots, bringing shore life into both the sound and visual world surrounding recent releases.

Previous single “Do You Feel the Same Way” began sketching that landscape. “Smash Your TV” moves deeper into it. The guitars feel sun-bleached rather than polished; the groove stays spacious enough to breathe. There is funk in its movement and psychedelia around its edges, but neither interrupts the track’s unhurried center.

Baileigh’s reference points stretch considerably wider than the coast. Their stated inspirations range from Khruangbin and Joe Bataan to Blood Orange and Prince, a combination that helps explain the fluid territory surrounding their own wave-rock and funk-informed songwriting.

Music Built Around Connection

The ideas behind the single also sit within a larger creative life. In 2025, Baileigh reestablished their solo work under their legal name, alongside coming out publicly as transmasc nonbinary and pursuing gender-affirming care. Their EP Transitions explored the complicated emotional terrain surrounding that experience.

Outside the studio, community remains central. Baileigh founded Dank Dykes, a queer cannabis social club, as well as queer artist collective Conduit Media, and continues to organize events and local music showcases around those communities.

Seen through that lens, the openness of “Smash Your TV” feels less like an isolated theme and more like part of an ongoing concern: finding ways back to ourselves and to other people when the surrounding noise makes both difficult.

The Sound of Stepping Outside

Baileigh Jane handles vocals, lyrics, guitars, synths, bass, drums and production on the track through Hummingbird Records. Rose Daniels contributes bass, while Ron Shaffer of Atlantic West Studios handles mixing and mastering.

The result feels appropriately uncluttered. “Smash Your TV” does not need to shout its central idea. It lets the guitars drift, gives the rhythm room and leaves the door open.

Sometimes the smallest change in attention is enough. Put the screen down. Notice the afternoon light. Go somewhere without needing to document that you were there.
