In the world of roots and Americana, few voices resonate with the clarity and emotional depth of Callie McCullough. Known for her evocative lyrics and genre-blending sound, Callie’s music invites listeners on a journey through vulnerability, resilience, and hope. But behind the scenes, the life of a working artist is a delicate balancing act—one that requires as much attention to personal wellness as to creative craft.

As she continues to carve her path in the music industry, Callie opens up to Divine Magazine® about the rituals and routines that keep her grounded, the challenges of maintaining well-being in a demanding field, and the ways in which her creative process and self-care are deeply intertwined. Whether you’re an aspiring musician, a creative professional, or simply a fan of authentic storytelling, Callie’s insights are sure to inspire.

Your music beautifully weaves together roots, country, and folk influences. How did your musical journey begin, and what drew you to this unique blend of sounds?

I grew up third generation in a musical family… Sometimes I joke we were one of those families that just throws you on stage with a banjo when you’re five years old and hopes for the best…. My dad was a big rock, blues, and folk guy, and my mom was traditional country and bluegrass all the way, and then of course with a last name like McCullough, the Celtic background can’t help but come through. I grew up backstage, in the tour van, in the studio and at jam sessions all over the country… by the time I was 14, I was playing my own shows

You’re known for deeply personal and evocative storytelling in your songs. Can you share a moment or experience that recently inspired your creative process?

I’ve recently been staying out in California, and the moment I sat down on the balcony in Studio City, an entire song just poured out in 10 minutes… Some songs are special like that—they just fall out of the sky and you catch them. Life can be really busy, so I find a lot of creativity in those moments of quiet.

Maintaining personal wellness as an artist can be challenging. What practices or routines help you nurture your well-being while staying creatively inspired?

I’m big into natural healing—it’s not talked about enough, but life on the road is hard on your body. A good chiropractor, massage therapist, and acupuncturist are the saviors of touring musicians. I’m also a big believer in juicing and I love to cook when I’m home… And we love to go out walking and hiking anywhere we travel—sometimes we even get to golf!

How do you handle the pressures of the music industry while protecting your mental and emotional health?

I’ve been a workaholic since I was a teenager—but I’m learning to take breaks now and have more fun … We don’t just need rest—we need play. Good friends and family outside of the biz keep me grounded, and honestly—my cat.

Are there any wellness rituals—whether it’s meditation, exercise, or downtime—that you rely on to recharge during busy periods or tours?

I love to go out and walk—more of a meander to explore than intentional exercise. I’m also a big book nerd so I love to go find independent and used bookstores while travelling

When you hit a creative block, what strategies do you use to reconnect with your inspiration?

Try not to force it, and it will come… change the scenery, change your routine, live some life and let the inspiration come

Your lyrics often touch on vulnerability and resilience. How does your approach to songwriting support your own personal growth and self-care?

I think, especially with this record, there was a lot of searching happening for me in my own life- and asking big questions, so these songs really let me make those questions real…

How do you balance the demands of performing, recording, and promoting your work with the need for personal time and reflection?

I think it’s just embracing that there are seasons of slow and seasons of busy and learning to enjoy each of them

Has your perspective on wellness and creativity evolved over the years? If so, what lessons have shaped your current approach?

It definitely has—I used to push myself to the breaking point and exist solely on caffeine… seeing that crash and burn forced me to find better ways to take of myself… gentle exercise, less caffeine, earlier bedtimes, lots of water, eating well, stretching and all the good things are key to long-term sustainability

What advice would you offer to other artists or creators who are trying to prioritize their wellness while pursuing their passions?

You have to—if you’re not well, your art can’t continue—take care of yourself!

As our conversation draws to a close, it’s clear that Callie McCullough’s commitment to both her craft and her well-being is as genuine as the music she creates. Her journey is a reminder that creativity and self-care aren’t just compatible—they’re essential partners in building a sustainable, fulfilling artistic life. Whether through her reflective songwriting or her honest approach to wellness, Callie continues to inspire fans and fellow creatives alike to honor their own stories, both on and off the stage.
