Australia may be known as a football- and rugby-loving country, but more than 1.2 million Australians are actively playing basketball these days, making it the country’s second most popular team sport.

So if your child has been watching a lot of basketball games and spending time playing the sport with his friends, you could be looking at someone who’s showing greatness in the sport. As a parent, how can you support your child’s love for basketball?

Acknowledge your child’s interest in the sport.

A lot of children want to be seen by their parents, especially the things they’re interested in. So if your child has been shooting hoops in the backyard, let him know that you see his interest in the game and that you’re ready to support him. This is the first step to fuelling that desire in your child to pursue his passion, knowing that he has parents who are ready to back him up.

Set realistic goals with your child.

It’s not enough to just acknowledge your child’s love for the sport. You also need to be hands-on in guiding him towards the right path. You can start by letting him start a goal book and sitting down with him in creating small yet achievable basketball goals that will guide him in the right direction. It could be something like shooting 10 free throws, dribbling properly, or learning a new basketball skill. Once your child achieves these goals, make sure to celebrate them and move on to the next so you can keep that fire burning inside him.

Let your child join a basketball program.

While your son can easily look at online tutorials to learn basketball moves, there’s still nothing quite like learning from professionals. Good thing, you can easily find a basketball holiday program today, thanks to the rising popularity of the sport in the country. In the summer, you can let your child participate in this program instead of the usual summer camp to really get him immersed in the sport. A holiday basketball program isn’t just an opportunity to hone your child’s skills in the game of basketball, but it’s also a chance to meet kids who share the same passion. This is a good socialisation activity, especially for younger kids who show a lot of potential but are too shy to really develop their skills.

Invest in the right gear for your child.

Basketball is a contact sport, which means that your child is at risk for different injuries while he’s on the court. But one of the best ways to prevent this is by investing in the right gear and equipment for him. For one, your child needs comfortable and durable shoes that will allow him to move freely. In fact, the right pair of basketball shoes can really make a huge difference to your child’s game. Shoes these days come in different shapes, colours and sizes, so make sure to let your child decide on the right pair that he’ll be most comfortable wearing. Your child also needs good-quality sportswear that he can wear comfortably while playing.

These clothes should be made from breathable fabric to allow air to circulate throughout his body, especially during the summer when it’s extra hot. Of course, there are different accessories that your child can wear to add to his safety. And if you have the space, you can even invest in a good-quality hoop and basketball for your child to shoot hoops at home during his free time.

    Fuel your child’s nutrition.

All athletes need proper nutrition to fuel them in playing the game of basketball. Since your child is young, he needs that extra boost of nutrients to make sure that he keeps his energy up and that he has all the fuel he needs to last the entire game. Proper nutrition is also crucial for your child’s recovery after a game, and it helps him to prevent any injuries while playing the game.

For starters, hydration is critical when your child is playing. This is why it’s very important to pack enough water that will last throughout the entire game. You should also pack some healthy snacks that your child can munch on during the game so he’ll have enough energy to play.

It’s also very important to prepare healthy meals for your child back home. If you don’t know where to start, you can consult a nutritionist to know exactly what type of foods your child needs in his diet.

    Offer positive affirmation.

When your child is passionate about the sport, he doesn’t always need to win to make you feel proud. Even in failure, always offer positive affirmation to continue to encourage him to play. You can praise his efforts, sportsmanship and teamwork, especially if you see that he puts in that extra effort to work hard during games. Athletes need positive reinforcement, especially during losses, so you have to be there as a parent for your child.

Give your child ample time to rest.

When a child shows potential in basketball, it’s easy to let him work and work until he becomes a master of the game. In fact, a lot of parents forget that their child also needs to rest to do better in the game. So if you see that your child’s schedule becomes packed, make sure that you give him time to get a lot of rest to recharge his body and keep him from being burned out. In fact, you can plan vacations with the family to let your child unwind and enjoy life outside the court. By showing him a different perspective in life, you allow him to create that balanced lifestyle that he will need if he pursues a career in basketball.

At the end of the day, your support as a parent will mean the world to your child. So make sure that you follow these tips and learn as you go.
