Some hotels are memorable because of a spectacular location. Others stay with you because of the room, the food, or the way the staff makes you feel welcome. During my stay at Dream Gran Castillo Resort in Playa Blanca, Lanzarote, I found a little of all four.
Set close to the Atlantic Ocean on Lanzarote’s southern coast, the large resort combines Canarian-inspired architecture with pools, restaurants, family facilities and expansive sea views. I stayed here as a private leisure traveler, so this review is based on my own experience rather than a hosted press visit.

First Impressions of Dream Gran Castillo Resort
Dream Gran Castillo Resort is located in the Playa Blanca area of Lanzarote, with architecture designed to evoke the feeling of a grand historic fortress. It is a substantial property, and that becomes apparent almost immediately after arriving.
During our visit in early January, the hotel was busy and appeared to be operating at or close to full occupancy. Despite that, my first impression was positive. The reception staff were friendly and courteous, and we were welcomed with a glass of Cava while checking in.
We were also given a map of the resort. That might sound like a small detail, but it proved useful: the hotel’s different levels, corridors, staircases and buildings can make it feel surprisingly maze-like when you’re finding your way around for the first time.
Our Room — and Why the View Matters
We stayed in a spacious two-room suite on the fourth floor, and the location became one of the highlights of the stay. From our room, we could look across the hotel grounds and out over the Atlantic, with views stretching toward Fuerteventura.
The suite gave us plenty of room to spread out rather than constantly getting in each other’s way. There was a television in each room, while the balcony had sun loungers and could be accessed from both rooms.
The bathroom was equally generous, with a Jacuzzi-style bathtub, separate shower and toilet, double sinks and a walk-in closet.
If I were choosing a room here again, however, I would pay particular attention to its position. Some rooms facing the pool areas appeared noticeably darker. Even a partial ocean view can make a considerable difference to the atmosphere of the room, so this is one upgrade I would consider when comparing room options.
What the Pools Were Really Like
The pool area is one of the resort’s biggest attractions. At the time of our stay, there were several saltwater pools, including heated options during winter, along with separate areas designed for children.
Sun loungers and umbrellas made it easy to spend a substantial part of the day around the resort, while a pool bar provided drinks and lighter food without requiring a trip back inside.
Families were particularly well catered for, with dedicated children’s pools and a larger kids’ area that included water slides during our visit.
Don’t Skip the Sea
There was a small bay close to the hotel, but I wouldn’t choose the resort specifically for that beach. During our stay, it was pebbly with slippery, sharp rocks and wasn’t particularly inviting for swimming.
The better reason to leave the pool is what lies farther along the coast. The Papagayo area is within reach of the resort and offers a much more memorable opportunity to experience Lanzarote’s coastline.
The hotel’s pools were perfectly enjoyable, but when you’re staying somewhere surrounded by the Atlantic, it’s worth making time to actually swim in the sea.
Food and the All-Inclusive Experience
Food was another pleasant surprise. The main buffet restaurant served breakfast, lunch and dinner, and I found the overall quality genuinely good for a large resort buffet.
Rather than relying entirely on trays of food sitting under lids, there were fresh dishes and cooking stations alongside Spanish, local and international options. During our stay, selections included grilled fish, lamb, duck, entrecôte, freshly prepared pizza and a generous dessert selection.
The service made a difference too. Restaurant staff were accommodating, spoke good English and generally made meals feel relaxed despite the size of the property.
There were also specialty restaurants available during our visit. We particularly enjoyed the Italian restaurant and would happily have eaten there again.
Because restaurant concepts and all-inclusive inclusions can change considerably over time, I wouldn’t use a decade-old review to decide exactly where you’ll eat today. Instead, consider this part of the review a reflection of the experience we received during our stay and confirm the hotel’s current dining arrangements before traveling.
Service Was One of the Highlights
One of my strongest memories from Dream Gran Castillo is the service. Staff members were consistently friendly and helpful, from reception to the restaurants.
A bellboy we met around reception stood out in particular because of the effort he made to ensure guests were satisfied. In a resort of this size, personal service can easily disappear behind the machinery of running a large hotel. During our visit, that wasn’t my experience.
Evenings at the Resort
Evening entertainment was available at the hotel, with shows changing from night to night. The atmosphere became much quieter once the scheduled entertainment finished, though, so travelers looking for late-night bars and nightlife will probably want to head into Playa Blanca rather than spend every evening at the resort.
One of the more enjoyable alternatives is simply walking along the seafront promenade. It offers a chance to see more of the surrounding area while turning the journey into part of the evening rather than simply traveling from hotel to town.

- The small bay immediately beside the hotel wasn’t my favorite place for swimming.
- Travelers looking for lively late-night entertainment may prefer heading into Playa Blanca after the hotel’s evening program ends.
- Because this stay took place in 2015, current facilities and policies should be checked before booking.
Would I Stay at Dream Gran Castillo Resort Again?
Based on my experience, yes.
Dream Gran Castillo wasn’t perfect, but the combination of a spacious ocean-view suite, good food, extensive pool areas and genuinely friendly service made our stay memorable. The location also gives you the option of enjoying a self-contained resort holiday while still venturing out to discover Playa Blanca and Lanzarote’s southern coastline.
My biggest booking tip would be simple: pay attention to the room location. Our elevated room with views across the Atlantic added enormously to the experience.
I originally ended this review in 2015 by saying that, as a private leisure traveler, I could recommend the hotel and would return. Looking back at the experience years later, that remains an accurate reflection of how I felt about the stay.
