Brite Spires are a 4-piece electro band from London UK.
Brite Spires began in Spring 2018 with a chance encounter, at a music shop in Oxford’s Cowley Rd, where drummer Cal Brumhead and guitarist Drew Atkins re-united, having previously played in bands together. Over a beer at the City Arms, the inevitable agreement to meet up and jam on acoustic and drums was made. Songs soon took shape and while on holiday in Tuscany, possibly inspired by the grandeur of Florence, Drew decided to return and arrange the songs in a ‘wide-screen’ style, with epic synths, huge beats and big guitars. Inspired by Oxford’s gothic towers and colleges, the name Brite Spires was agreed upon.
Enlisting a local singer Clare Violet, whom Drew knew from a mutual friend, it was time to make some demos. These quickly garnered Track of the Month on BBC Introducing and local highly influential music magazine ‘Nightshift’, with the addition of a colour frontpage of the Oxford Times. Due to personal reasons, Clare had to remove herself from the band, so Drew and Cal widened the net to London and met a highly talented bassist ‘Fischer Luigi’, a German born Italian from a Caribbean family.
What first got you into music?
I grew up in a very loud household! Both my parents are opera singers so I grew up travelling the world with them and living in the wings of the theatre. They got me into doing piano lessons and before I knew it I was singing as well. I entered kids popstar competitions and immersed myself in the world of musical theatre.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
You only have one life, so live it to the fullest! And remember, life happens for you, not to you.
What is your favourite song to perform?
‘Listen’ by Beyonce. It got me through my parents’ divorce and comes straight from the heart every time I sing it.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
You define yourself. In the words of Doctor Seuss, ‘there is no one youer than you.’ People will tell you a variety of things as you grow up, but it’s up to you to decide what labels you wear. I personally decided to make up my own!
When did you start writing music?
When I was eight I entered my friends and I into a popstar competiton and I wrote a song for us to perform called ‘2,4,6,8’! Nowadays I turn my poetry into songs.
What was the last thing you dressed up as for fancy dress?
My friends and I collaborated and did Tiger King. I was one of Joe Exotic’s three husbands.
What was the last TV series you watched on TV?
I just finished watching the US office!
Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?
Margot Robbie. She has always been my idol and if she could even resemble me remotely I’d know I’ve made it!
Do you have any superstitions?
Sort of! I believe that everything happens for a reason because you can find a reason for everything that has happened. I also believe in karma a LOT – and the law of attraction. You really can attract something into your life, positive or negative, if you put your mind towards it enough.
What movie ending really frustrated you? And how would you change it?
It’s not a movie but I was really frustrated by the ending of How I Met Your Mother. That being said, it’s fictional and I, therefore, decided to believe my own ending, which basically ends the series in the third last episode. Robin would end up with Barney (because they are perfect together) and Tracey never dies. Apologies if there are any spoilers there!
