Confusionaires are a world-class rock & roll band that is constantly pushing the boundaries of what rockabilly and country music can be.
The trio of Edmonton-based musicians has built a sound that’s synonymous with the hardest-hitting and country and rockabilly acts around with a sound that stands on its own. Their sound fills dance floors with fans from ages 8 to 80. Since the inception of Confusionaires in 2017, the trio has focused heavily on live performances throughout Western Canada, earning their place as festival darlings and as a must-see live act. Their impact has led to the successful release of 2 full-length albums and 2 E.P. – And now their third full length album, and most ambitious collection of works to date: Westernization. Confusionaires are bringing this new crop of thoughtful and hard-hitting songs to the people who believe that music should have a little dirt under its fingernails.
What lead you to become a music artist and what advice can you give to others aspiring to make a hit?
I would encourage any writers to not worry about hits, and just worry about quality. It’s important for an artist to be of their time, and to forge ahead with integrity and sincerity. Sincerity is possibly the most important part of songwriting. People can tell when a song or artist is insincere and those songs and artists don’t have staying power or longevity in their careers. I’ll always want to be regarded as a great songwriter with consistent output and a solid collection of works rather than a guy who wrote something catchy once and spent the rest of his career trying to duplicate it.
Great music doesn’t have an expiry date.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
Don’t be married to the outcome… things seldom end up the way you think they will – a closed mind will see this as a failure and an open mind will see it as an opportunity.
What does your music say about you?
Albums are like chapters in your life. They document the feelings and emotions of a time period, most often. My body of work tells a story of human evolution and progression, and the music I’m making right now is centered around change and purpose. My music tells the story of how we’re all doing our very best, despite our challenges.
How do you deal with writer’s block?
I don’t believe in writer’s block. When people talk about writer’s block, what they’re really saying is that they’re afraid of writing something bad. The truth is, we all write something bad on occasion… but if you write frequently enough you’ll eventually stumble on to something good. You can always toss the bad stuff out later… but the consistent practice of writing is important.
Do you enjoy recording and production?
I absolutely love it. To put tireless work into making something that can be shared, that will eventually sound exactly the way you want it to is an absolute dream, and I’m lucky to have lived that dream several times over.
What would be a good theme song for your life?
Lost Highway by Hank Williams… but probably the Jason & The Scorchers version.
Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?
Brad Pitt. Who wouldn’t want that?
