Emmy Law is an indie pop singer-songwriter currently based in Nashville, TN. Before moving to the city in February 2021, she spent four years in Atlanta, heavily involved in the local music scene.

She released her debut EP ‘Fairyland’ in September 2017 after running a successful Kickstarter campaign to fund the album. Citing influences from Sara Bareilles to Copeland, Emmy plays her blend of folk and pop across the Southeast.

    Getting to know Emmy Law

    What makes you nostalgic?

Music music music. There’s nothing that hits the pit of my stomach like a song I was obsessed with during a certain period of my life. Nothing but music has ever made me feel that way. So many things flood my mind all at once when I hear those tunes. Funny to think about which songs I’m listening to now will cause that reaction in me down the road.

What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?

    Honestly…..burgers, potatoes, and bacon. Yep.

Do you have a cherished childhood teddy bear or other stuffed animal sitting on your bed at home?

I do actually….no shame! We’ve been through so much at this point haha, no point in getting rid of him now. 🙂

Which are cooler? Dinosaurs or Dragons?

I used to think dragons, but now I say dinosaurs! Months ago, I wrote a dinosaur-themed song with my Twitch family so now I love dinosaurs. 🙂

You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color would you be and why?

Cozy Cloudy Blue….I wanna drink the clouds and the shade of blue I see in my head.

Tell us a little bit about your new ‘Bitter Heart’ EP:

I’m so proud of this EP! Is it the best work I’ll ever release? I hope not, but it’s a huge step in a direction I’ve been wanting to go in for a while. The songs were written around a specific vocal sound – I wrote them in Logic with a lot of vocal stacking. In the studio, Mat Poole helped me realize my vision for the vocals, and I’m proud of the result. I wanted the EP to give listeners a hopeful feeling, and I hope we accomplished that! This is also the first music I’ve recorded in Nashville, so this EP will always be special to me.

What is the best advice you’ve been given?

An indie artist who I really admire, Danielle Ate the Sandwich, told me once to “be fierce” and to fearlessly be my authentic self, and that would show in my music. I’m still working to get to that place, but her words have always stuck with me.

    What’s next for you?

Right now I’m focusing on getting settled in Nashville and meeting other writers here. For the next few months my goals are to record a music video, start recording my next project, play some rounds around town, and start getting into co-writing!

How do you go about writing a song? Do you have a melody in your head and then write the other music for it?

I almost always start with the melody! I usually play a chord progression and sing over it for a while. Then, I start singing gibberish words…a lot of the time these random words determine what the song is about. Lately I’ve started writing more intentionally about specific topics, and that feels like a lot of growth for me. I’m excited to explore that space!

How do you deal with writer’s block?

I watch a movie or show! Turn my brain off! Just live a little without focusing on the need to write and finish songs…usually when I relax, the creativity comes back.
