Magnus Chapple is a talented singer/songwriter and producer from Salisbury, UK. Currently living in London, he is experimenting with a wide array of production techniques and instrumentation, to develop his sound.
Getting to know Magnus
If you could be a superhero, what would your superpower be and your superhero name?
No hesitation my power would be teleportation, imagine being able to go anywhere anytime instantly. My superhero name would probably be something strong and noble like ‘Gregg’.
What would be a good theme song for your life?
Anything from ‘Les Miserables’ not because my life is like a french revolution but simply because I’m singing the themes and motifs from the musical pretty much every day of my life so it might as well be the theme song.
What do you think the greatest invention has been?
For me personally it’s got to be the piano, that thing is absolutely wild. Who was like “I know lets get a bunch of blocks and attach those blocks to hammers and then those hammers hit some strings and Hey Presto you’ve got music” what an utter nut job to whom the whole world is indebted?
Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?
Everyone has a pair of lucky pants, right? I’ve actually got a couple pairs that I like to wear for shows simply because they’re the most comfortable and that makes me feel like I can perform better.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Even though this is one of the most commonly asked questions I always struggle to have comprehensive answer to it. When I set out to create a track there is almost always a heavy influence from R’n’B, but other than that my stuff can be an amalgamation of whatever I have been listening to around the time that I’m writing so I wouldn’t say I have a typical type of music that I create.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
I think it would be amazing to work with SG Lewis as I have been drifting towards the more dance influenced scene and the music, he creates is something special.
What would you be doing right now if it weren’t for your music career?
I’d probably be doing a masters in something like economics to try and escape the monotony of the working world by being a student for as long as possible.
Have you got a ritual of sorts when writing and thinking about your music?
I wouldn’t say I have a defined ritual of sorts but some of my favourite songs that I have created have started as a drunk voice note one my walk home from a night out. I’d love to say that my best ideas ‘come to me in a dream’ but in reality, inspiration strikes when I’m stumbling home trying to remember if I have any chicken nuggets in the freezer.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
I’ve been given a lot of bad advice inn my time, but I’d say the best of them was probably to not concentrate and obsess over the actions and successes of your friends, family, or even complete strangers. Life is not a race, and even if it where we are all running at different paces.
If we were to look at the artists you are listening to, who would be on your playlist?
I actually curate a Spotify playlist of everything that I’m listening to and vibing with. Right now, it’s got Duckwrth, Rasharn Powell, Dominic Fike, Young Franco to name a few.
When you create music, what is your personal purpose or goal?
I just want to create something that makes me happy, personally, and if I feel as though I have done that then I don’t worry about anything else too much.
