A rough-cut gem on the indie-pop scene, Natty thrives on experimenting with the feelings and emotions she’s able to portray in her music by being as authentic as possible and exploring themes rarely touched upon. She writes ambitious and unapologetic songs about the ups and downs of life, often with darker, more introspective undertones.
Already backed by BBC Introducing, Natty has amassed a dedicated online fanbase who have followed her journey of self-discovery and coming out as LGBTQ on her social media and YouTube channel. Born and raised in Cardiff, Natty is a self-taught multi-instrumentalist and cites artists such as Ed Sheeran and Alec Benjamin as her biggest influences.
What inspired you to make music?
I’ve always been very musical thanks to my parents giving me the opportunity to pick up music when I was young. I started piano lessons when I was 4 and remember writing pretty bad songs (that I can still remember) when I was 6 years old. I then went on to learn flute and saxophone. When I was 13 I picked up my Dad’s guitar and taught myself to play by ear, shortly after I discovered Ed Sheeran. His music got me through hard times and inspired me to sing and write with an acoustic guitar. I would say that’s where my passion began to start writing and singing my own songs.
How do you feel the Internet has impacted the music business?
The internet has opened up the opportunity to have a worldwide audience. So much so that the importance of building a large online audience has grown massively and is almost as important as live gigging. It gives you the opportunity to share your life at the touch of a button and to have more of a personal connection with fans.
Have you got a ritual of sorts when writing and thinking about your music?
I don’t have a ritual, I just write music when I’m feeling strongly about something or I’m upset. It’s my therapy.
How would you describe your music?
My music is vulnerable yet powerful pop.
What’s next for you?
I’ve got a few new releases up my sleeve and definitely some live shows in the new year.
What are your top two favorite songs of all time? Why those songs?
Nocturne in C Sharp Minor by Chopin because I deeply feel every note.
Le Festin by Camille and Michael Giacchino from the film Ratatouille. It never fails to make me feel happy and want to dance.
What was the last TV series you watched on TV?
YOU on Netflix.
What do you think the greatest invention has been?
Electricity.
Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?
I always carry Citrine in my pocket which is believed to bring prosperity, joy and energy.
