Reya is a London based dark pop artist whose music speaks from the depths of her heart.
With Chilean heritage, Reya is originally from Norway but grew up in Spain, resulting in her rich, multicultural upbringing being a key ingredient to her unique style and sound. Her roots play a huge role in her story, with the artist having recently rebranded after previously creating music under a different name.
Reya’s journey to where she is today has been a rollercoaster. Over the last year, the singer, songwriter and producer found herself in the midst of studying final bachelor year in Music production, releasing 6 singles, played on Norwegian national radio and BBC introducing, several shows in London – with the highlight of supporting the Norwegian treasure DAGNY at her London show, and her following show in Norway. Only to have the music taken down, due to false accusations. As a result of all this, REYA without the AND returns.
What is the best advice you’ve been given?
You don’t need to know what it is, to know what it isn’t. If something doesn’t feel right, that’s sometimes enough. You don’t need to justify a bad gut feeling; you just need to know that you’ve got a bad gut feeling. And that’s enough.
If you could change anything about the industry, what would it be?
It’s so crucial for people to feel represented and like they can identify with whoever is in the spotlight so that they can also visualize themselves achieving their dreams. Therefore, although it’s come a long way in the last few years, I think that the industry needs to include more people from different backgrounds, ethnicities, and genders. It’s so important for the younger generation to feel seen, and for the industry to be more inclusive, both in front of the microphone and behind the desk.
What about your music is rebellious, unconventional, or unusual?
Many things. It’s dark pop with roots from all around the world. I can’t make my mind up as to which language to sing in so it’s in both Spanish and English, the production is pop with a twist. My main goal was for the listener to have a vivid visual experience throughout my songs. And I love to rebel against a good old traditional mindset.

How do you deal with writer’s block?
I try not to force it. I’ve found that uphill battles are uphill for a reason. Therefore, I try to distract myself and find new ways of looking at how to climb the mountain, rather than wasting energy. Songs that are forced, sound forced so may as well spend my time wisely, by learning something new or doing something completely different. And then it usually flows when you least expect it.
Do you enjoy recording and production?
I love it. It’s one of my many favorite things to do. Producing is an art form that I find fascinating. Creating a landscape with sound is so much fun. The possibilities are endless. What’s not to enjoy?
Was anyone else involved in writing, recording, or producing the songs?
I’m so lucky that I get to work with two of my close friends, Nick Ferreira and Plamen Vasilev throughout the whole process. I love getting to write, produce and record with them. Attention, my latest release and the next few to come wouldn’t have been possible without that little team.
Would you have any advice for would-be artists or songwriters wanting to follow in your footsteps?
If you can’t stop thinking about doing it, do it. And just go for it. What’s the worst that could happen? You learn or you reach your goals.
What is the most useless talent you have?
I can crack my back like it’s bubble wrap.
What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?
Any food.
What makes you nostalgic?
Smells. Brings memories right back.
Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?
Before any gig, I must listen to señorita by Justin Timberlake. Great song that brings back great memories and energy.
If you were captain of a ship, what would you call it?
Titanic. I don’t trust my ship skills.
