How would you describe the music that you typically create?

I would say it’s a folky Australian suburbs version of Americana. My experience has always been growing up and living in the outer suburbs, so I would say that has had a massive impact on the music I make.

What do you enjoy most about being an artist?

I like the sense of adventure and the community. Playing in different venues and with other artists, many of whom you don’t meet until the day of the gig, is always a great way to keep things interesting and uphold that sense of adventure that does seem to vanish during the work week. It’s always good to get out and meet new people too; building a connection over music and a beer or two is always a great time.

What are your plans for any future releases?

Now that Long-Haul Flights is in the world, I have my next single, “Leaving Brisbane,” almost ready to go, so that won’t be too far off at all!

What are your ambitions as a songwriter and musician from here? I really just want to enjoy it. It’s very easy to get caught up in streaming numbers, ticket sales, touring, etc. I really just want to get back to enjoying the process more than the marketing side of it all. I love songwriting, I love playing gigs of all sizes, and I love recording with friends. I just want to keep the “fun” part of it all alive for as long as I can.

If we were to peek over your shoulder, what does your studio look like? What gear do you typically use?

At home I have a small studio setup, mostly for demos and writing. I usually use Logic Pro X and my GAP active ribbon mic for that stuff. I do try to borrow cool bits and pieces when I can, like some outboard preamps and things, but I’m lucky enough to have a J45, so it sounds good no matter how you record it!

If we were to look at the artists you are listening to, who would be on your playlist?

I’m a big music fan, so there is always a lot going on, and I have a different playlist for every conceivable mood, but the high rotation stuff is usually folk/country/Americana. Artists like Tyler Childers, Jeffery Martin, Paul Kelly, Kasey Chambers and things like Bob Dylan, Willy Nelson and Woody Guthrie etc.

What makes you nostalgic?

pretty much everything. I’m far too sentimental, and I can find nostalgia in almost anything. For the most part, 80’s Australian cars seem to be the big one for me.

Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?

Julia Louise-Dreyfus

If you were a member of the Spice Girls, what would your spice handle be?

Drunk Cigarettes Don’t Count Spice

Are you a valuable asset on a pub quiz team?

If the quiz is on the golden era of the Simpsons (Seasons 3-10), then I’d be a cromulent addition.

You are a new addition to a crayon box. What color would you be and why?

Probably a dark green or brown, maybe a red? Definitely some sort of earth tone.
