Young Mommy is more than a dedicated mother, she is an innovator launching a rap revolution. Breaking barriers with her content, Young Mommy’s brand of non-explicit music has put her at the forefront of what she coins, a “clean rap movement.”
This gifted hip-hop talent and mom of 4, is shifting the landscape of what parents can consume with their children around. Her releases are not just for mothers with kids though, her work is for all rap music lovers that are looking for a female rap sound without the hypersexual language and messaging.
Raised in Canada, the flourishing artist grew up listening to a lot of American rappers. Immensely inspired by that sound, she even performed as Run DMC in her school’s concert. When she became a mom, her love for jamming out to the genre had to take a back seat. She shares, “I found I couldn’t listen to rap in front of my kids when they were about 2 because of the explicit lyrics and images in mainstream music. They began emulating popular female rappers in their videos.” This was when the light bulb went off and Young Mommy had that “a-ha” moment. She could craft fresh flows without any explicit lines. Now she has become an advocate for parents and children, creating a wholesome listening experience and filling a void in the current offerings of the rap genre.
What first got you into music?
I realized after having kids I couldn’t safely listen to rap with them around. The messages aren’t aimed at kids and I didn’t want them exposed to concepts that involved drinking, drugs, guns and sex. The lyrics from female rappers are super sexual so one day I got an idea that I could be the change I wanted to see and give my kids and anyone who wanted a cuss-free rap experience an alternative.
Who inspired you to make music?
My kids! My first 2 kids were about 2 and 3 years of age when the younger one came up to me with a scarf wrapped around her chest saying, “I’m Nicki Minaj!” It was at that moment I realized that my kids were emulating artists they were watching on YouTube. They were starting to repeat words and phrases even in the “cleaned up” edits of songs that were not okay for their age to be repeating. So it truly was my children that sparked my mission to create PG commercial rap and to turn my love of hip hop into my own music brand.
How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Trap-inspired, bouncy, pop-rap with commercial appeal. I inject messages of girl power, female and mom empowerment, confidence and creative wordplay.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
It would be a dream come true to collab with Mackelmore, Will.i.am, P!NK, Katy Perry, Gwen Stefani, Lin Manuel Miranda, Lizzo, Lecrae and many others clean/inspirational rap-pop artists!
What is one message you would give to your fans?
If you don’t know your purpose and what you should be doing with your life, ASK! Look to the sky, sit in silence, pray, do whatever you need to do and speak to whoever you think is “out there” and ask, what should I be doing with my life? I did that in 2012 and have been following the calling that was given to me after asking this exact question. If I didn’t ask I wouldn’t have received my answer and perhaps would still be feeling lost, hopeless, unfulfilled and empty in the area of my career. It’s ok if it takes time to pursue your mission, but we all need something to pursue while we are here on this earth, and it’s better to have a dream that takes time to fulfill than no dream at all.

This year she shows no signs of slowing down. Young Mommy hopes this next piece will be as successful as her last. “Swanky Ma” is an up-tempo, salsa-inspired rap beat that could honestly be played in the car, home, salon, mall or club. “It’s for all the mamas who want to feel more confident and own their hotness and power.” Going from a 7-year marketing career to concocting clean rap, Young Mommy inspires moms and people everywhere to take a stand in what they believe. This visionary is trailblazing a path for other artists to consider the effect their music has on children and challenges them to write content without the need for expletives.
