The Haze & Dacey Collective bring us a new song entitled “Jezebels” and it is on repeat!
Based in Richmond, Virginia, Haze & Dacey revel in lilting melodies, tight harmonies, and compelling rhythms that make toes tap and bodies sway. The duo saunters from folk-pop to alt-country to roots-rock, creating a homegrown organic sound with upright bass, acoustic guitar, piano, shaker, tambourine, and mouth-horn.
Haze & Dacey have been playing together as a duo since 2012. They combine their love of playing music with their love of travel, entertaining audiences at various breweries, wineries, and other venues throughout Virginia, and occasionally North Carolina, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Connecticut, New York, and Pennsylvania.
Jezebel’s is the second single to be released from their forthcoming album. Letters from Gilead. In “The Handmaid’s Tale,” both in the original novel by Margaret Atwood and in the television series derived from it, Jezebel’s is a sleazy speakeasy where the rich and powerful men of Gilead take their pleasure. The song tells the story from the perspective of one of the women forced to work there. Many of the women were well-educated and pursued professional careers in their pre-Gilead lives, as lawyers and architects, doctors and teachers. In Gilead they were forced into service as handmaids, and when they failed to bear children, they were given the “choice” to work themselves to a slow, painful death in toxic wastelands, or prostitute themselves. Fancy clothes, abundant alcohol, and drugs are the only escape from the intolerable reality.
The subject matter is beyond depressing but in their music they went for a sultry, sexy swing to evoke a much more pleasant type of speakeasy, where you’d want to drink and dance and have a good time. “Jezebel’s” is notable for being the first song they ever composed on piano as their songs are usually composed on guitar. This song started on guitar but quickly changed to piano to convey the mood.
They say that it has really opened up the songwriting door to possibilities and we can’t wait to hear what comes of it!
