Detroit based singer-songwriter Julie Haven has dropped her brand new single “Between the Lies,” out today.

“Between the Lies” is a song that delves deep into the underpinnings of domestic abuse and gaslighting. It is raw, emotional, and the lyrics paint a very powerful picture of a tumultuous relationship, and the questioning of how and when to walk away.

It is a courageous piano ballad, which builds up to release heavy emotions contrasted with impactful passages to reflect the explosiveness of toxic love.

Musically, the song came to Haven as if it had already been written; starting out with gentle piano chords and vocals and building into a rich crescendo with strings and percussion. Memorable and evocative, “Between the Lies” is a single that stands out and relatable to so many others who have been in a similar circumstance:

“Am I all the things he says I am? Would no one else truly love me or be able to put up with me? So one day I sat down at the piano and this song came out of me. It’s like deep down I knew these were lies I was being told, but at the same time I was believing these lies. The crazy part is I was a strong independent woman before I got into this relationship, and while I was being mentally abused I was so embarrassed and shocked that someone so empowered originally could be beaten down to nothing. I never understood how women would stay in an abusive situation until I became that woman. It happens so slowly you don’t even notice it until it’s too late.”

“Between the Lies” was written and performed by Julie Haven, with string arrangements by James Hughs.

The track was recorded at Yackland Studio and Sound Emporium in Nashville TN, and engineered and mixed by Stephen Leiweke.

The video made to accompany the song is equally brilliantly produced, with convincing acting that really makes the song even more memorable.

    Haven says:

“My hope is that other women and men who are going through or have experienced a similar situation will resonate with this song and find that they are not alone. If anyone is still struggling with walking away from an abusive relationship I hope they hear this song and gain wisdom and strength through it.”

Julie is entirely self taught and wrote her first song at the age of 7. By the seventh grade, she was already inspired to keep going by Tori Amos’ album “Under The Pink,” after which she began to seriously consider a career in music and started regularly performing solo shows at local music venues.

Over the last two decades, she has perfected and polished her sound having gigged extensively as both a solo artist and as part of several groups. Her upcoming album “Dramatic Departures” is due for release in the spring of 2024.
