London, Ontario–based singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Marty Kolls has released her latest single, “Waves”. A calm and meditative folk-pop track, the song draws directly from the natural rhythms of water to explore the concepts of struggle, surrender, and emotional grounding. Gentle yet deeply resonant, the single reflects on the natural ebb and flow of life, offering listeners a quiet space for reflection and release.
Born from the Shores of Lake Huron
Inspired by time spent along the coast of Lake Huron, “Waves” emerged from Marty’s lifelong, deep connection to water.
- The Duality of Water: “Whether observing water from the vastness of the ocean or a ripple in a pond, it has been the root of inspiration for me for much of my life,” Marty explains. “Its stillness can anchor me while its waves can cleanse me”. This duality sits at the absolute center of the track.
- An Intuitive Origin: The creation of the track was entirely organic. Marty shares that the song came to her at the tail end of sleep. As she woke up, the core chord progression was already running through her mind, prompting her to immediately capture it on the keyboard.
- Embracing Imperfection: During the recording process with producer Simon Larochette, an unexpected vocal “hiccup” accidentally shifted the rhythmic phrasing of the backing harmonies. Rather than erasing it, Larochette encouraged Marty to keep it, and it ultimately became their favorite part of the track—a testament to the song’s reliance on pure instinct.
A Lyrical Landscape of Acceptance
Lyrically, “Waves” leans into acceptance and emotional growth. With poignant lines like “Fear is healthy, fear is good, even heartbreak makes you grow,” Marty beautifully captures the idea that struggle and uncertainty are not obstacles, but necessary catalysts for becoming. Like water itself, the arrangement smoothly navigates through tension and release, eventually settling into a place of calm surrender.
