What do you enjoy most about being an artist?
Thinking we’re not artists. We are like this, we create because we like it, and we need it, we certainly are and have always been since we were very young, but we are not interested in defining ourselves as such. Apart from this clarification, we really like playing live, we repeat.
What about your music is rebellious, unconventional, or unusual?
Our music is at the same time rebellious, unconventional and unusual because we don’t think we’re making obvious music, we have our own genre which we consider totally personal and recognizable and above all distant from the mainstream path that the majority is used to follow.
Which famous musicians do you admire?
Erika: I really admire Shirley Manson. During my adolescence, Garbage literally amazed me. Manson is very close to her fans, she is wise, she talks generously, and supports women and her colleagues, in general. They touched on important issues like diversity and mental health in the mid-90s in a way that no one had ever done before, and it was truly redemptive for me at the time.
I obviously also admire all the singers of the past who allowed her, and allowed us to be inspired by them with that attitude and that way of performing and communicating, such as Patti Smith, Siouxsie Sioux and Blondie.
Demi: famous musicians I like are too much, famous musicians I admire Ennio Morricone, Giorgio moroder, etc.
What is your favorite song to perform?
Absolutely Double Rainbow, the audience responds very well and if there’s the right situation the mosh pit starts, it’s definitely the most punk song. But we love all our songs without distinction.
Demi: not to say Double Rainbow too, I say ‘Too late’. I also like to hear the explosions of synth and distorted guitar while I play.
In your opinion, how do artists in this industry stay on top of the game when faced with so much competition? What is the secret to making yourself noticed?
Every artist must be authentic, there shouldn’t be any kind of competition. The music industry that wants to standardize and profit from musicians without meaning is shit. In this way, we don’t create real music, but simple packaged products.
There aren’t many secrets to reveal. Obviously we would prefer to get noticed only with live performance, but It is essential to communicate well what you do and have a good budget to do it.
What is the most useless talent you have?
Erika: Burping so loudly it amazes everyone. I don’t know if it’s really useless as a talent, because I’ve discovered that many people like it.
Demi. I have a very serious expression when I joke, and people often don’t understand that I’m joking.
Erika: Me too! Those who understand black humor also like this talent.
If you were to write an autobiography, what would the title be?
Erika: Border. The fun side of living on the edge
Demi: Born to be wild
Who would you want to play you in a movie of your life?
Erika: Natalie Portman or Winona Ryder. Jenna Ortega might be suitable to play me as a young girl. I wouldn’t mind Margaret Qualley either, but she has such beautiful blue eyes, that it would be a shame for her to wear brown lenses.
Demi: Robert Patrick, T-1000 the villain of Terminator 2. Resolute, evil, composed of liquid metal. Furthermore, t-1000 is a Fear Factory song that I adore, which inspired me to start playing hard-core music many years ago.
What movie ending really frustrated you? And how would you change it?
Erika: I would never allow myself to change the ending of a film. I confess that I still wouldn’t be able to watch the death scene of Bambi’s mother, as a child I pushed the forward button every time that it damaged the VHS.
Demi: any Friday the 13th or Halloween movie. Jason and Michael Myers never die. What anxiety. The film should end with the protagonist vivisecting the villain with an electric saw.
If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?
Erika: When I was really very young I thought I was already too old to sing or act, because I didn’t study music when I was little, but I started self-taught. So I would tell myself “Do what you like, and keep doing it, it’s never too late. Don’t think about social conventions and the judgment of shitty people.”
Demi: Not smoking!
On May 3rd they released a new single entitled Workers.
The song is also accompanied by an official music video by Polverino, a sort of surreal journey verging on the absurd into the world of workers and those who manipulate them, which aims to convey the most total disillusionment with politics, criticizing – with a touch of sarcasm in full Border. style – all forms of extremism that have always produced destruction. There is a diver taking the bus to work; will he be a migrant who escaped the fury of the sea? There are workers in overalls dancing with the tools of the trade, challenges to the singular tussle between communists and fascists. And, of course, there are the desperate CEOs who cannot find workers and watch from a screen judging the “choices” of migrants.
