Named after KC and the Sunshine Band and grew up listening to legends such as Led Zeppelin, Stevie Nicks, and Sheryl Crow. Like many successful singers, KC began singing at church, but the family’s frequent rodeo trips made it tough to attend regularly. “My mom is a championship barrel racer, and my stepdad was a bull rider!”
At just 17, KC and her mom set off to Nashville with her acoustic guitar, ready to turn her dreams of becoming a recording artist into a reality.
Beyond the lively pipes that lead you on a whiskey-soaked adventure to your favorite honky-tonk in the most enjoyable way, KC Johns’ music is as captivating and vibrant as she is. Having discovered her stage legs young, KC jumped feet-first into this business called music, performing everywhere from Dollywood, where she was featured in Dolly Parton’s “Christmas Coat of Many Colors,” to cruise ships around the world. After performing in ports throughout the Atlantic, the Caribbean, and everywhere in between, she climbed the mainstream music ladder, opening for artists like Luke Bryan, Chris Young, Randy Houser, and Trailer Choir.
With the musical sensibility of Otis Redding, the raw stylings of Chris Stapleton, and the rock vibe of Led Zeppelin, each song is an audible shot of your favorite drink—they take your breath away, feel good going down, and leave you wanting more.
What first got you into music?
I got into music because of my grandad. He played guitar and he taught me to play. We used to sit on the front porch and pick together.

How would you describe the music that you typically create?
Country/Rock
What sets your music apart? What is unique, or at least uncommon?
There isn’t many country/rock female artists, I feel like my music as both of those mixed with raspy blues vocals.
Is there a city or venue that holds special significance to you, and can you share a memorable experience from there?
Hogsbreath in Key West, FL. is definitely our most memorable because we play out there 4 to 5 times a year. Folks come from all over, so it’s the best place to meet people from different cities. We always get great energy from folks out there. Maybe it’s the sunshine
What’s the funniest thing that’s ever happened at one of your shows?
Well, I’ve definitely tripped on my heels before, but you get right back up and keep going. The boys in the band and I still laugh about this.
How do you handle the pressures of performance, and have your strategies evolved over time?
I’ve been on stage since the age of 3, I feel at home most when I’m on the stage in front of a crowd. BUT there are still times I get nervous, I’ve found if you just try not to think about it too much and you’re well prepared, you have nothing to worry about.
What is your creative process like?
Late at night is when the creative juices start flowing for me. BUT there are times when you have to be in the studio or be in a write at 10am. I feel like when I’m surrounded by other creative minds, the juices will flow naturally. I’d say the best way to be creative is to not hold anything back. Don’t be afraid to speak your mind.
Who would you most like to collaborate with?
Sheryl Crow, for sure.
What would you be doing right now if it weren’t for your music career?
In the past, I’ve said something with books, maybe a book editor, because I’m a huge book nerd. BUT over the years, I’ve been into exercising & nutrition. I feel like I’d be a personal trainer or yoga instructor.
Where have you performed? What is your favourite and least favourite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
I started on the Beale Street scene in my teenage years, I performed on cruise ships for 6 years, Dollywood Theme Parks for a season in 2016, played the broadway scene in Nashville for years to now performing on the road – everywhere from all over the states to international venues. I don’t think I have a favorite or a least favorite. I feel like every venue is an experience. Of your own music, do you have a favourite? If so, can you pin down why?
Rodeo Queen is my personal favorite right now, because it’s the first time I’ve written about my family.
What are your musical plans for the next 12 months or so?
Headed out on a country/rock n roll tour!!
What actor would play you in a movie about your life?
AJ Michalka – I feel like she would kill it!
Do you have a cherished childhood teddy bear or other stuffed animal sitting on your bed at home?
I do actually! I have a teddy bear that my grandma made that stays on my bed!
What would be the ideal food to have cooked for you on a date night?
Steak.
If you had to describe yourself as a flavour, what would it be?
I’d be spiced honey!
What is your most expensive piece of clothing?
Probably my $400 paid of Corral boots.
