Who inspired you to make music?
My Dad raised me on Joni Mitchell. He’d recite her lyrics before she’d sing them, and I got used to songs that painted pictures. He also plays guitar and led every family jam, writing his own songs here and there. I think he was the model for me of how to be a great music fan and creator.
How do you go about writing a song? Do you have a melody in your head and then write the other music for it?
A melody and nonsense words will come to me as I’m driving, or doing dishes, and I’ll record it on my phone. It will drive me nuts until I match it with a story and schedule the time to flesh it out. Sometimes a beautiful moment will come when I’m at the piano and a songs just flows out, a bit out of body! Some songs you have to fight for more.
If you could go open a show for any artist, who would it be?
Dolly Parton. I do Dolly tribute shows, and through studying her I’ve fallen in love. Her kindness and her warmth and her camp have really served her and her music, and I know she’s have the best, most diverse audiences.
If we were to peek over your shoulder, what does your studio look like? What gear do you typically use?
It’s purple. There’s a yamaha digital piano, a guitar on the wall, and a shelf of scores for musicals. There’s drawings of Gordon Lightffor and Joni Mitchell on the wall, a photograph of a glacier taken by one of my great friends, one of my first setlists, and my degree, so my voice students know I mean business haha.
Where was your last song recorded?
We recorded Brandi Baby, along with the rest of the album, in Lake Echo Nova Scotia. Our producer has a studio on his property in the trees looking over the lake. We recorded over Thanksgiving weekend so it was a cozy, creative time.

What are your plans for any future releases?
I’m releasing an album called Sequoia on September 13th. The album is a variety of styles and stories, described by my producer as Sharon Van Etten meets Sesame Street. I’m releasing a single called Confetti later this month, about a bad tumultuous romance with a musician, and a song called “Alberta” in August, about being a treeplanter out West.
Which fictional character do you wish was real?
Anne of Green Gables.
If you could change anything about yourself, what would it be?
My ability to arrive somewhere on time!
Do you have any lucky items, objects, or traditions?
One of the best friends I ever made gave me this blue sequin cuff that kind of looks like what Wonder Woman would wear around her wrist. We have lost touch, but I still love her so much, and I wear the cuff every show.
What would you bring along to an idyllic picnic?
Red wine, Tuna Sandwiches, and chippies.
If you were talking to a younger version of you, what advice would you give yourself?
Get more sleep! I feel like I would have retained more if I wasn’t sleeping through my music theory classes in University. I probably would have been a bit cheerier too.
