Musical artist and filmmaker, Jessica “Jess” Silber, is set to release her first music video, “It Hurts to Love a Woman,” this Valentine’s Day, February 14th.
The music video was a winner at the Global Music Awards, The IndieFEST Film Awards, a finalist at the New York Short Film Festival, a semi-finalist at Blow-Up Arthouse Filmfest, a nominee at the LA Independent Women Film Awards, and an official selection of the Macon Film Festival and International Music Video Underground.
In the spirit of learning to love yourself, Silber chose Valentine’s Day to release this evocative piece. “It Hurts to Love a Woman” follows the queer story of two almost-lovers on a quest for self-love, confidence, and sexual longing. Silber employed a distinctive filmmaking approach, shooting half of the music video on a high-end RED camera and the other half on a humble $20 camcorder. This intentional visual duality highlights the juxtaposition of two drastically different experiences, in the same exact space. Silber intricately captures the beautifully tragic tale of falling for someone who doesn’t love themselves.
In a unique artistic endeavor, Silber not only lends her songwriting and vocal talents to the project but also takes the director’s chair, crafting a visually stunning narrative. Speaking about her creative choices, Silber shares, “We tend to remember the dark, painful, and even traumatic moments with a kind of clarity that overshadows our happier memories. I wanted to use these two very distinct cameras to mirror the power of the mind. Making this film was not only a personal journey for me to process and move on but, above all, a reminder to never lose myself in the quest for someone else’s love or validation.”
“It Hurts to Love a Woman” was written by Jessica Silber, arranged and produced by Rob Taube and recorded at Groove Garden. The film’s Director of Photography is Jesse Coyote and it stars Kristina Bermudez and Morgan Coyle-Howard. It was executive produced by Caroline Gaylon, Chelsea Girvin, co-produced by David Spadora, post-produced by Laura Valk, choreographed by Kristina Bermudez, edited, colored, and music supervision by Laura Valk of Skout, with hair and makeup by Hannah Lauren, set design by Desdemona Dallas, and intimacy consultation by Amy Northup.
