Patricia Silverberg realized music was her path when she attended the Lilith Festival in Phoenix, Arizona, where she saw Natalie Merchant, The Indigo Girls, and Sarah McLachlan perform live. She had already given up the dream of being a singer and performer until the revelation of watching those female singer/songwriters in action. She’s inspired by modern life and everything it offers, the good and the bad. Her raw, intelligent folk/rock lyrics illuminate the world as it is, rather than how we pretend it should be. She brings comfort and relatability to those who have felt alone and outcasted.
Her new release from her album, Just The Way I See It, is the americana/folk cover of “Midnight Special,” where we wake in the morning to the “same damn thing.” Her voice is reminiscent of Natalie Merchant and Tracy Chapman. Her use of the Harmonica and drums are powerful and make the song whole.
“I discovered the traditional version of the song while listening to the Mother of Folk, Odetta,” shares Patricia. “Her low and powerful voice enthralled and resonated with me as I am a contralto. I started preforming the song at folk festivals to draw in audiences with something familiar (which it did). I related to some of the lyrics; some of my working conditions felt like being in prison. I work and live “right to work state”–which comes down to you have few rights. Since the traditional lyrics mentions a long ago sheriff, I modernized it to reflect the prison conditions in Phoenix.”
