Robbie Vonn is able to create music that feels as though you can reach out and touch it. He makes life, love, and loss tangible with his cinematic style of pop, with inspiration from bands like Queen and Radiohead and classically trained musicians like Mozart and Paco de Lucia. His new 3 song EP, Hopeless Memories, out October 22nd, is simple and elegant yet powerful and moving. He tackles hard subjects of love, loss, and fairness. While Robbie Vonn is the musical mastermind behind Hopeless Memories, Juliet Lyons lends her dreamy voice, adding a layer of mysticism.
The first song on the EP, “Sundown,” is the most fantastical and dreamy of the three. Employing the piano as the song opens and moving towards a synthetic sound and beat carries the message of fading love. Love starts out sweet, but in the end the sweet and melodic nature of a relationship is gone. “It’s about fading love,” says Robbie. “Two people who were madly in love get to that moment of silence (after kids left home probably), that it’s not uncomfortable but deeply heartbreaking knowing that is and has been over for a while. ‘Now, there’s no enigma when nobody is around, and time has brought the sundown, is this the end?’ At the end one just wants to remember, hold the best of it and let go.
The next song on the EP, “Glowing Butterfly,” leans more towards the melodic side, though still employs a synthetic feeling. The piano used is played in the high key section, giving it the sharp and sudden feeling of loss. He sings of letting the pain in and feeling the tough feelings of loss. One day, it will just be a distant memory. “It’s about loss, the grieving process, and its acceptance,” says Robbie. “Life continues and we have to learn how to live without those who left this world. At the end, the song invites to ‘let the sorrow heal that grieving broken heart’ and reminds you that ‘pain won’t last forever’ and memories will become that light you used to turn on as a kid when you were scared at night.”
The last song, “If I” is the most melodic of the three songs. While not completely leaning into the pure musical sound, the synthetic parts aren’t as strong. The piano Robbie plays is more playful and poetic than the other songs, an interesting backdrop to a song about feeling hopeless and out of luck. “It is about unfairness. Somebody, probably suffering during his/her last days on earth, wondering ‘Why Me?’ with the desperate desire of being someone else, ‘someone fun to spend some time with, free from any pain.’ At the end, they give up dreaming or feeling someone taking his/her hand just to say goodbye.”
Robbie Vonn’s cinematic pop EP is everything you can ask for. It’s easy to listen to and completely relatable. His musical elegance and Juliet’s powerful voice marry together to create the EP of your dreams.
