Bedroom pop is a sexy proposition. A reimagining of the DIY spirit behind all low budget musical genius, bedroom pop is our response to staying inside. It’s a genre that restates something we already know but excites us anyway–anyone can make music.
Following the massive success of bedroom-recording artists like Billie Eilish, Producer, indie video game composer, and NYU grad &seb–Sebastian Brunner-Stolovitzky–has created a world for his music online. “I’m Okay” is a departure from indie game bitpop. Leaning instead into a comforting, lo-fi sentimentality, &seb seems to be after a different kind of nostalgia. It isn’t the 8-bit time machine he is banking on, but a softer, almost eerie familiarity–think Glass Animals’ How To Be A Human Being.
We are quickly acclimated to the single’s easy groove, moving through ghostly vocals and a killer bassline to find ourselves singing along by the end. It’s catchy–the kind of song you want to believe. When asked what about this single stands out to him, &seb emphasizes form. “How the verses, choruses, bridge, etc. all fit together—is different than the typical form you hear in most pop these days. I wanted to switch it up a bit.”
By blending unfamiliar form with an eerily familiar sound, “I’m Okay” allows us in, but keeps us at arm’s length, excited to hear more.
