Shape-shifting, subversive artist SUUNCAAT returns to her unapologetically experimental sound with new single “bite,” a whispery, slightly cursed phonk-adjacent club cut about self-control in environments built for excess. With a unique, avant-garde sound, the track blurs the lines between video game soundscapes and club beats, pulling the listener into both at once.
The song was inspired by a solo night out in London, during which the artist found herself more “attuned to the actual music” than to the “social ritual” of going out. “‘bite’ emerges from that perspective of calm and composure in an environment designed for overstimulation,” SUUNCAAT explains.
The music video takes this track to a whole new, otherworldly level. Directed by Rory Creelman, the video reads like a hypnotic dystopian nightmare, both unsettling and strangely empowering, shaped by exclusion and power reclaimed from the margins. The piece begins by introducing a new character into the SUUNCAAT universe, the Queen of Rats, played by SUUNCAAT herself. As an extension of the rats, this persona is intended to represent resilience born from rejection. The video includes one other character known as BELANIMA, the chaos virus, who exists in containment as the embodiment of chaos externalized. Together, the two figures create a tension between order and disorder, control and rupture, survival and destabilization.
Musically, “bite” leans into a more stripped-back, deliberately sparse sound than her previous works. With whispery, sensual vocals, the sound feels slightly cursed in an enigmatic yet strangely intimate way, as if whispered directly into the listener’s ear from a distant world. Grounded in the repeated mantra, “I’m not gonna eat it all / I’m only gonna have a bite,” the track is built around trading traditional club excess for something more controlled and physiologically charged, making the production tightly wound and built from muted, phonk-leaning rhythms and clipped, skeletal percussion that never fully explodes. Instead of euphoric release, the sound remains contained and deliberate, hovering in a state of tension where every sonic element feels withheld rather than given.
SUUNCAAT has been drawn to music from a very early age, growing up listening to 40 radio and playing “Moonlight Sonata” on a toy piano in her free time. Shortly after that, she was enrolled in violin lessons and later fell in love with the guitar and eventually evolved her musical identity across many different instruments, production styles, and genres by blurring lines and breaking barriers. Influenced by growing up surrounded by Montreal’s punk and electronic underground scene, during her formative years, she decided on the name SUUNCAAT as an homage to Moondog, the originator of outsider music. In 2024, SUUNCAAT was born after breaking off from her previous band, deliberately deciding to focus more on smaller collaborations and honoring her production skills. SUUNCAAT is set to debut live in Tokyo this June, bringing her uncanny, cybernetic universe to life for audiences in Japan.
