Before the era of curated algorithms and infinite scrolling, music was a tangible ritual. It was found in the static of an MTV’s 120 Minutes marathon, passed hand-to-hand on a burned CD-R, or discovered in the sweat-soaked air of a community hall. Toronto’s melodic punk stalwarts Wasting Time aren’t just remembering that era—they’re breathing new life into it.
Their latest single, “Ripped Blue Jeans” (out now via People of Punk Rock Records), is a high-octane rush of adrenaline that feels like a summer night in 1998. Mixed and mastered by Matt Gauthier at Arc Studios, the track serves as a sonic bridge between the band’s grit-heavy catalog and their highly anticipated upcoming album, Are You Out Of Your God Damn Mind?
With a pedigree that echoes the raw sincerity of Alkaline Trio and the infectious energy of Blink-182, Wasting Time has spent years earning their stripes on the road from Canada to Japan. “Ripped Blue Jeans” is more than a throwback to chain wallets and flannel shirts; it’s a reminder of why we fell in love with three chords and a chorus in the first place. It’s a love letter to the skate-punk scene that raised them and a promise that, in their hands, the tradition of melodic punk is alive, well, and louder than ever.

What first got you into music?
Music grabbed me early. I listened to my brother’s cassettes of Viktor Tsoi in Russia. We later make our way to Canada after navigating our way through some murky waters. When I was in grade 4, Dookie and Smash came out, and that would be the start of it all.
Who inspired you to make music?
The early 90s and 2000s punk scene had a lot of bands like Green Day Blink 182, NOFX, Goldfinger Alkaline Trio Strung Out, MXPX, and No Use For a Name Watching live performances where the room felt like it might explode made me think, “Yeah… I want to be part of that.”
What sets your music apart?
We care deeply about melodies and are always trying to make the best new music. Punk energy, but with honesty, detail, and a sense of relatability. We don’t try to be anything but ourselves.
What’s the best show you’ve ever played?
Japan. Both trips were incredible, but the Kofu show in particular felt surreal—packed room, everyone singing along even if English wasn’t their first language. It’s the closest I’ve ever felt to something like that
What’s the worst show you’ve ever played?
We once played a show where the PA didn’t work, the sound guy quit the day before, it was terrible, there was so much feedback, and the monitor mix was a complete mystery. I remember looking back at Nick (our drummer) and mouthing, “I’m done.”
What is your creative process like?
I usually start with a melody or a lyrical hook. I record rough ideas on my phone, sit with them for a bit, then build the rest around that of the first line. The band helps shape them into something real; that’s where the songs come alive.
What is one message you would give to your fans?
Thank you for giving a shit. Every stream, every show, every message—it all means the world to us. We can’t wait for them to hear this new stuff
What is next for you?
We’re writing our next record, planning more touring, and pushing to take things to the next level. The goal is simple: keep growing, keep connecting, and keep making music that means something.
What actor would play you in a movie about your life?
Giovanni Ribisi
Back in high school people said we looked alike.
If you could have any superhero power, what would it be and why?
Teleportation. Imagine touring without airports, lost gear, or 17-hour drives. Heaven.
Tell us your best joke.
What’s the hardest part about being a bass player?
Telling your parents you’re … oh this one will get me in trouble lol
What do vegetarian zombies eat? ….. “Graaains”!
What would be a good theme song for your life?
“As Good as I Once Was” by Tobey Keith … didn’t see that one coming eh ?
If you were a crayon, what colour would you be and why?
Probably orange. That was my favourite colour as a kid because of Michelangelo of the ninja turtles .
