New York City dream pop artist Chris Baluyut explores the depths of what it means to be human in his songwriting. His music leads us on emotional journeys through interpersonal relationships and our inner feelings and our thought processes, collective and otherwise.
He just released his new single “Come Back to the World,” a lo-fi, downtempo, dream pop single reminiscent of Bon Iver and a hint of Harry Styles in his vocals. It’s a somber yet powerful song, Chris says it’s about “wishing I could have done more for someone close to me when they needed it the most, but staying hopeful that I’ll have another chance to be there for them.”
There’s an air of reminiscence in the lyrics of “Come Back to the World” but also an underlying confidence and optimism which is driven home by a hypnotic beat, consuming synth bass, and a vocal delivery that grows in strength as the song progresses. This feeling is most aptly presented as Chris sings, “And I know when it’s all over, I get to say you changed me.”
The music is delicate, with a slowly picked guitar and Chris’s welcoming and soft voice. The melody, while light, is gripping and draws you into the lyrics. It’s so deliberate that when the beat drops, you take notice and pay attention to what he’s sharing. He’s open and raw about not being there for people we care about, a feeling that we can all relate to at some point or another.
