Small town indie-rock is having its heyday once again as listeners move their ears away from the big city stereotypes in search of music and experiences, they find more relatable.
One band with a growing audience of sincere fans are Litvar, the American indie-rockers from Willimantic, Connecticut, who are in some ways defined by their experiences growing up in such an unassuming place, but it’s also their battle against the status quo that comes through with such power in their genre-blending sound.
It’s in their newest song ‘You Should Find A New Boyfriend’ where Litvar’s identity comes into full focus:
“We wrote ‘You Should Find a New Boyfriend’ in an Air BNB in Los Angeles during our first proper tour. Coming from small town Connecticut, flying across the country to play in a big city was very overwhelming, and so we found ourselves in our comfort zone, sitting together making music.”
Joined by their shared experiences, these lifelong friends Rex Thurstan (he/they), Violet Falkowski (she/they) and Joe Lemieux (he/they) also strive to push the boundaries of what’s expected in their sound. This new single initially presents itself as a minimalistic, mid 00s indie-pop track, allowing the more sensitive side of this emotionally charged narrative to show. However, once the track reaches the 1:36 minute mark, it explodes in a fury of punk-rock sound with a huge chorus and massive pop hooks that once again displays this band’s deep understanding of the mercurial nature of anxiety.
Speaking about the song’s dramatic evolution, the band also share that:
“Sonically, ‘Boyfriend’ is us playing with dynamics, exploring our electronic pop influences and satisfying our thirst for huge modern rock choruses. Lyrically, it’s about searching for space while being swallowed by anxiety, using the idea of begging for air in a strangling relationship.”
Complete with a music video by the award-winning film director Alejandro Montoya Marin (The Wrong Guy, Millennium Bugs, Rebel without a Crew), ‘You Should Find A New Boyfriend’ will be out on October 28th ahead of a US tour – find dates below.
The single will also feature on Litvar’s sophomore album, Eloquently Aimless, due for release in 2023.
