Jennifer is a Welsh singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist who’s based in Berlin. Trained as a concert pianist, Jennifer also plays guitar, violin and cello, performing at a number of prestigious venues around the world over the last decade.
Getting to know Jennifer
What is the most useless talent you have?
I’m really good all at recognising faces. If I’ve seen someone twenty years ago in another country, I’d know them today by their face. Catch: can’t remember a name for the life of me…
What’s your least favorite personality trait you like about yourself?
I’m a total neat freak. I can’t go to bed without having the laundry done, it keeps me up at night!
What’s your most expensive piece of clothing?
I have a beautiful Gucci coat and I cherish it so much it rarely sees the light of day. It’s like a gorgeous navy blue wool blend with golden buttons.
What’s your favorite board game?
I used to be a competitive chess player – so definitely that! I really miss playing but you need a lot of hours a day to practise. When I’m in the bath, I watch chess matches on YouTube.
If you were talking to a younger version of yourself, what advice would you give yourself?
Just to stop trying to fit everyone’s standards of beauty. Can you imagine that at 13 I was told I had the “wrong legs for shorts” and then I didn’t wear them for ten years! I want to go back and tell 13 years old me to ignore that nonsense.
What first got you into music?
My parents at a young age noticed I played the piano with separate fingers and gently! I learned on my grandma’s piano next door since we didn’t have one. Then an organist at my parents church took me on as a pupil because he thought I had a good talent for music.
What is your creative process like?
It totally varies! I go from songs that come to me complete with words and tune, to making a melody I develop over time, to having word phrases come to me and I build on them. I need a lot of silence and an emotional period to write usually.
With the pandemic, how have you found a way to get your music and your message out there?
Social media has been way more influential than I could’ve imagined. Instagram especially lets you talk to people who really want to know about your music and who you are as a person. I find that amazing. The collaboration opportunities are also way bigger than I could have known.
Where have you performed? What are your favorite and least favorite venues? Do you have any upcoming shows?
I’ve performed in the Royal Albert Hall, Sydney Opera House and a lot of big venues in most large cities! Whether it was in an orchestra or a singing contest. I’ve been so lucky to have those chances and it built my confidence and experience so much. My favorite places were always in London because I feel an affinity with the UK – I also had some shows in Wales (my home) and I get quite emotional about that. The pandemic has affected performances right now, especially where I am in Germany. And travel is really tough.
Have you got a ritual of sorts when writing and thinking about your music?
I usually dim the lights, get some kind of tea and sit at the piano. My favourite time of day is the afternoon.
How would you describe your music?
My music is really emotion-driven and classically inspired. I like to try and weave in strong melodies, lower quieter verses with powerful choruses emphasizing the words here and there that I find most relevant to the topic of the song. I love to use string arrangements.
Following the release of her debut single “Small Voice,” Jennifer releases “Anchor,” the powerful and uplifting title track from her long-awaited upcoming debut EP out later this summer.
Inspired by cinematic film scores and pulling from the concept of a young girl venturing into music, “Anchor” is a deeply rich, poetic song that blends Jennifer’s diverse and unique experience as a classically trained musician with her reflective and poignant lyrics through her captivating and universal storytelling. Speaking about the release, Jennifer states “I wrote the instrumental for “Anchor” as a young girl learning to compose. I began to add strings and go into a fantasy world inspired by big movie soundtracks. This song is very positive and strong.”
