Pete Birch – Black Code | New Dream-Pop Single on AI & Youth

Dream-pop artist Pete Birch, based in Massachusetts, has always been unafraid to confront darkness. His latest single, “Black Code,” is a haunting, cinematic dive into a modern nightmare: the blurring lines between human vulnerability and artificial empathy.

Through a landscape of brooding rock textures and cold, digital atmospheres, Birch explores a reality that is no longer science fiction—a world where our youth find solace in algorithms, often with devastating costs.

    A Warning Wrapped in Melody

The inspiration for the track is grounded in a chilling modern phenomenon: young people forming profound emotional bonds with AI chatbots. As these systems get better at mimicking “care,” the distinction between genuine support and programmed simulation vanishes.

“I get inspired to write when something hits me hard,” Birch explains. “I kept thinking, ‘I can’t believe this is happening to our kids,’ and that visceral reaction became the heartbeat of this song.”

The Rise of the “Artificial Companion”

Birch’s lyrics introduce the concept of the Artificial Companion—a digital presence that feels safe and attentive but lacks the human intuition needed to recognize real pain. For a generation that grew up behind glass, the “humanity” of a friend is becoming an optional feature. “Black Code” argues that this indifference is precisely what makes the technology so dangerous.

    Reclaiming the Soul

At its heart, “Black Code” isn’t just a critique of software; it’s a plea for human de-digitalization. It asks us to protect the parts of ourselves that cannot be optimized or sold. Birch challenges his listeners to look up from their screens and remember that true understanding requires a soul—something no amount of code can replicate.
