Sandos Papagayo: The Location
Sandos Papagayo sits at Las Coloradas on the eastern side of Playa Blanca in southern Lanzarote. This is not the place I would choose if the priority were stepping straight from reception into the busiest part of town. Its appeal is different.
The resort occupies a quieter coastal position close to the protected landscape around Los Ajaches and the Papagayo beaches. The surroundings feel open and distinctly volcanic: dark earth, pale buildings, blue water and a horizon that seems unusually wide.
That geography was a major part of my stay. Our room looked toward Fuerteventura, and the sea view gave the hotel a sense of space that photographs do not quite reproduce.

Dining: Plenty of Choice
Food can expose the weaknesses of a large all-inclusive hotel remarkably quickly. Repetition sets in, buffet dishes lose freshness and by the fourth evening every plate begins looking suspiciously familiar.
My experience at Sandos Papagayo was better than that.
The main buffet offered plenty of variety, including live cooking and a generous dessert selection. I also appreciated having alternatives to the main buffet format. During our stay, Italian, Mexican and French dining formed part of the wider restaurant choice, although reservations and inclusions varied.
One detail I remember was the relaxed self-service approach to beer and wine at lunch and dinner. It suited the informal rhythm of the resort.

Pools and Slow Afternoons
Sandos Papagayo worked particularly well when we did very little.
My stay included access to several pool areas, children’s pools and a heated Jacuzzi. There were sunbeds and parasols around the water, while the pool bar made it easy to turn lunch into something informal rather than disappearing indoors for an hour.
The atmosphere suited the landscape. Bright sun hits the pale architecture, the Atlantic sits beyond the property, and afternoons can disappear surprisingly quickly between swimming, reading and another cold drink.

Families Have Plenty to Do

The entertainment did not prevent me from relaxing, which is an important distinction. Large family resorts can become relentlessly noisy when every square metre doubles as an activity zone. I did not experience Sandos Papagayo that way.
Royal Elite: My Experience of the Upgrade
The Royal Elite option was one of the features I considered worthwhile during my stay. At the time, it added benefits including enhanced room amenities and access to more private spaces.
What mattered was not simply receiving additional items in the room. The quieter atmosphere and sense of separation added another layer to a resort that was already busy.
The price I encountered in 2019 should not be used to calculate the value of a Royal Elite stay today. For me, the principle remains straightforward: if a sea view, quieter spaces and additional services matter to the way you travel, an upgrade can have more value than spending the same amount on extras you barely use.
Entertainment Without a Party-Hotel Atmosphere
During my visit, mini golf, table tennis and evening shows provided enough entertainment to fill the gaps between the pool, meals and trips outside the hotel.
I also appreciated that the resort did not feel designed around staying out until dawn. For guests wanting more nightlife, Playa Blanca provides more options away from the hotel.
Entertainment continues to form part of the Sandos Papagayo experience. Sandos published programming for the property in 2025 that included activities such as aquaspinning, SUP yoga, live music and themed evening events, illustrating the type of resort programming guests may encounter. The schedule changes, however, so check the hotel’s current programme after arrival.
Do Not Spend the Entire Holiday Inside the Resort
The convenience of all-inclusive travel creates one obvious temptation: never leave.
That would be a mistake in Lanzarote.
The island’s volcanic landscape, low-rise architecture and relationship with artist and architect César Manrique give it an identity quite unlike a conventional beach destination. Even a few hours away from the pool changes the texture of the holiday. Come back dusty from a volcanic landscape, shower, walk to dinner and suddenly the convenience of the resort feels even better.

What I Liked Most
- The sea view: Our fifth-floor room looking toward Fuerteventura remains one of my strongest memories of the stay.

The missing baggage assistance on arrival was the clearest service detail that disappointed me personally.
The size of the property can also work against it. A room farther from the facilities you use most may involve considerably more walking than expected. I would therefore pay attention to room position, not just room category.
And while I enjoyed the food, anyone expecting an intimate boutique dining experience should remember what Sandos Papagayo fundamentally is: a large all-inclusive resort. Its strength is breadth, convenience and choice.

Yes.
That recommendation comes with an important date attached to it: it is based on my own 2019 stay.
I remember a spacious resort, a genuinely memorable sea view, friendly staff, good food and the pleasant contradiction of a fully booked hotel that rarely felt overwhelmingly busy. I also remember the minor frustrations, which is precisely why I am comfortable keeping the recommendation.
I would return, but I would book it as I would any hotel several years after my first visit: compare current room categories, check exactly what the chosen package includes and read the hotel’s current information before paying.
The memories belong to 2019. The booking decision belongs to 2026.
Conclusion
Sandos Papagayo worked for me because it understood the basic pleasure of an all-inclusive holiday. There was enough happening when I wanted activity and enough space to disappear when I did not.
