Setting up a roofing business – What you need to know

If you take your time and get the foundations right, it’s surprisingly simple to set up your own roofing business. While there are always risks launching any new business, if you get the first steps right, then success can be very achievable. Starting a roofing company will require you to have some basic skills, but you’re also going to need to develop a business mentality as well. It’s never been easier to start a business, and roofing is one option that comes with good profit margins and a lot of flexibility in terms of working hours. If you’re considering launching a new roofing firm, here’s what you need to know.

    1. Know your costs

You’ll be less likely to run into financial mishaps if you have a clear breakdown of your expenses. Include both your startup costs and your ongoing ones as well. The more that you know where your money is going to be spent, the more you’ll have an awareness of the profits that you’ll need to generate. Have an accountant look over your figures before you commit to anything. Don’t start your business by spending a fortune on tools and equipment. Starting a new business doesn’t mean that you have to rent a premises either. Very often, a desk at home and your mobile phone are enough to get you started. Only buy the tools that you need, and you’ll have a much more secure foundation.

    2. Remember recruitment

You aren’t going to be able to grow your roofing company if you don’t start building a team. Make sure that you only hire those roofers that know (at the very least) as much as you. However, if you want to keep costs especially low, then you might also want to look at local schools and colleges for those students that want to gain some real work experience. This can give you an extra pair of hands onsite, and could be a good way to teach your next full time hires when they finally leave education. Remember, your roofing company is going to need insurance, especially if you have employees. There are plenty of tailored insurance policies available for roofers. Keep costs down by sourcing cheap roofing insurance that will protect your business from every eventuality.

    3. Choose your jobs

Don’t jump into every single job that comes your way. If you agree to work that you aren’t skilled enough for then you are only going to damage your business name and your future. Only agree to the jobs that you know you can do well, as this will get more positive testimonials that can be used to attract future clients. As your skills and your team grow, you can start taking on those more complex jobs that can generate even more profits.

More people than ever are starting their own business. If you’re tired of working for other people and you want to take more control of your life, then launching your own roofing business is perfectly viable. Do your planning, don’t overextend yourself, and you could be your own boss before you know it.
