When Robby Takac first suggested re‑recording Let’s Knife, what was the moment you knew this idea could actually become a full album?
Naoko: At the moment when he first suggested it. I thought it was a fantastic idea and soon after that I started to make a plan for the recording. I don’t hesitate much and make decisions quickly.
The original Let’s Knife has a mythic status because it was never on streaming. How did that scarcity shape your relationship with the album over the years?
Naoko: First of all, the original Let’s Knife is a re‑recorded best‑hit album featuring songs selected from Shonen Knife’s first four releases, but it was an album reflected through the producer’s vision.
Revisiting songs you wrote decades ago can be emotional. Which track surprised you the most when you stepped back into it with the 2026 lineup?
Naoko: I think there is no concept of “Time” for music. We still play songs included in Let’s Knife at our shows and I don’t have any consciousness that these songs were written a long time ago. We could record all songs very smoothly. It was the most surprising thing.
You recorded the new version in Buffalo with Jay Zubricky. What atmosphere or energy were you hoping to capture that differs from the 1992 sessions?
Naoko: Jay is a well‑skilled, friendly, warm‑hearted engineer. He worked to realize our hope very quickly. Thanks to him, we could record with lots of fun.
“Riding on the Rocket” has such a whimsical origin story. How did reconnecting with childhood imagination influence the new recording or video?
Naoko: I’ve grown older while holding onto the feelings of my childhood. It felt completely natural to record with that same fresh mindset. Robby created the video. He is someone who has also kept his childhood imagination alive. I think the finished video turned out really fun.
The original album helped introduce Western audiences to Shonen Knife. How does it feel to re‑cut a record that Kurt Cobain once said made him “a nine‑year‑old girl at a Beatles concert”?
Naoko: There is no other way to describe how I felt about Kurt thinking that way than to say I am honored. I also hope that everyone who listens to Let’s Knife Re‑Cut will feel the same way Kurt did.
Your music has always balanced punk simplicity with joyful, almost childlike imagery. Why do you think that combination still resonates with new generations today?
Naoko: If our music resonates with new generations today, it’s wonderful. Music is forever and has no concept of “Time.” I can’t analyze it myself, but our music is always fun. It might be the reason.
Many fans discovered Shonen Knife through Let’s Knife. What do you hope first‑time listeners in 2026 hear or feel when they press play on the Re‑Cut?
Naoko: I think there are many people who never listened to the original Let’s Knife because it hasn’t been out since 1992. I hope people enjoy the upgraded version. I hope the listeners rediscover our fun, catchy pop songs.
You’re touring with Men At Work and Toad the Wet Sprocket this year. What excites you most about sharing the stage with artists you’ve admired for so long?
Naoko: I love both bands’ music a lot. What a gorgeous thing that I can see their show every night and dance!
The “Osaka Ramones” shows sold out instantly last year. What makes performing Ramones‑inspired sets so creatively freeing for you?
Naoko: Because I love Ramones.
Looking back at the early albums — Burning Farm, Yama‑no Attchan, Pretty Little Baka Guy, 712 — what threads or themes do you see connecting those songs to who Shonen Knife is today?
Naoko: My purpose to play music is to make people happy through our music. It is the common thread and theme. The theme is forever.
If you could send a message to your 1992 selves right before the original Let’s Knife came out, what would you tell them about the journey ahead?
Naoko: “Practice guitar more!” for the journey ahead.
