    "I Guess"

Chill, soothing, and eye-opening. That’s how one would describe the new single from Yutao, “I Guess.” It’s lo-fi ambience is blended with a nice R&B rhythm that embodies a feeling of reflection. It gives off a bit of a Frank Ocean vibe. While the songs comes across as a love song, it’s actually a conversation between Yutao and his younger self.

We all change as we age and even become the things we swore we never would when we were young. But sometimes the younger self doesn’t understand that in order to move forward to the next stage of life, you have to make a lot of sacrifices and become the person you once hated in your youth. This is most reflected in the lyrics “I guess it takes a second to realize things have changed.”

“This is something that the younger version of myself needs help understanding,” says the lo-fi artist Yutao. “That’s what the lyric ‘why you wanna hate me, you used to call me babe, you just don’t get me, I guess our life is crazy’ refers to.”

    Yutao

“I Guess” takes Yutao back to the beginning of his musical journey. He came up as a break-dancer but was sidelined for two years after an injury. Upon healing, he realized his moves weren’t as on-point as they were before the injury, and he longed for a fresh creative outlet. During this time, he started hearing and feeling hip-hop, R&B, and EDM in a new way. “The rhythms of this music gave me a rush—like the same sensation I had when I first started breakdancing,” he says.

From there, Yutao started to research how artists make and produce music, and he began making hip-hop. Yet, this route didn’t quench Yutao’s thirst to create. He looks at music as sound design, so, he had to dig deeper. Yutao started studying music theory to bring to life the rhythmic and richly textured music he heard in his head. “Everything comes from my head and my heart first,” he confirms. “Then I put the story, the lyrics, and the instrumentation together.”
